  • How to Prepare Your Pet for a Professional Photoshoot

Preparing your pet for a professional photoshoot can make all the difference in capturing beautiful, timeless images. Proper preparation ensures your pet is comfortable and cooperative, making the photoshoot a pleasant experience for both of you. This guide will walk you through quick tips and tricks to get your pet photoshoot-ready! 1. Grooming Essentials Some dogs are low maintenance and look good 24/7, if this is your dog, feel free to skip this step. Generally, a well-groomed pet looks better on camera. If you decide that your pet could use a good pamper, I'd start with a bath and thorough brushing to ensure their coat is clean and shiny. Or you could book a spa day for them at your favorite pet groomer. That said, if you're thinking of booking an adventure session with me, you might not need to bother with any serious grooming. Chances are pretty good that your pet will get wet or muddy by the end with all of the fun they're having! 2. Behavioral Training Basic training can greatly enhance the photoshoot experience. Work on commands like sit, stay, and come, which can help guide your pet into different poses at the session. Use positive reinforcement with treats and praise to encourage good behavior during the session. This is often not something that can be achieved on short notice, so don't worry if your pet doesn't have these commands down perfectly. I work with a wide variety of pets with various training levels and can always capture them looking their best. 3. Choosing the Right Accessories While your pet’s natural beauty is the main focus, accessories can add a fun element to the photos. It's important to get your pet familiar with the items before our session, so they are comfortable with it in advance. Choose accessories that are comfortable and match the theme of the photoshoot. For example, with sunflower-themed sessions, a cute sunflower, bumble bee, or tractor bandana can complete the look. If your pet isn't comfortable with accessories or you'd rather not use any, that's also totally fine! 🐶: @lifeisbetterwithfinn 4. Day of the Shoot On the day of the shoot, ensure your pet is well-fed and has had some exercise to burn off excess energy. Bring a bag with essentials like water, treats, and favorite toys to keep your pet happy and engaged. Arrive a little early to let your pet acclimate to the new environment. The first part of any pet session with me is very casual, where I'll talk with you and let your pet get used to me. Some animals are more wary of strangers, so I do my best to be as neutral and boring as possible to allow your pet to become more confident around me. 5. Share Your Vision Lastly, let me know if you have a specific vision for your session or if there are any poses or shots you'd like me to capture. I may not always be able to execute it exactly, but I'll give you my best representation of the vision. I love trying out new poses and shot ideas, so please don't be afraid to share your ideas with me! You can send me Pinterest pins or just explain things at the session. Conclusion Proper preparation is crucial for a successful pet photoshoot. From grooming and training to choosing outfits and communicating with your photographer, each step ensures your pet looks their best and feels comfortable. With these tips, you’re well on your way to obtaining photos that you’ll cherish forever. About Scruff Life Photography: Hi, I'm Lauren! • Beat the Heat: Essential Summer Safety Tips for Keeping Your Pet Cool

As temperatures rise in the Twin Cities, it's crucial to ensure our beloved pets stay cool and comfortable. Here are some essential summer safety tips to help your dog beat the heat this summer, straight from your favorite Minnesota pet photographer. 1. Hydration is Key Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water for your dog. Dehydration can happen quickly in hot weather, so make sure their water bowl is always full. Consider adding ice cubes for an extra refreshing touch. To prepare for a summer photo session with your pet, you can opt to bring a water bottle and a collapsible bowl to keep your pet hydrated! 2. Shade and Shelter Ensure your dog has access to shaded areas when outside. If your yard lacks natural shade, set up a canopy or umbrella to create a cool spot for them to relax. 3. Avoid the Hottest Parts of the Day Plan walks and outdoor activities for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. The midday sun can be intense and increase the risk of heatstroke. Conveniently, the coolest parts of the day are also the best times for photography. 4. Cooling Products Invest in cooling products like mats, vests, and bandanas designed to keep your dog cool. These products can make a big difference in their comfort during hot days. 5. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can skyrocket in minutes, leading to fatal heatstroke. Always take your dog with you or leave them at home. 6. Hot Pavement Alert Sidewalks and pavement can become dangerously hot in the sun. When the air temperature is 85°F, asphalt can reach a scorching 140°F, which can burn your dog's paws in less than a minute. Test the pavement with your hand; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog. Opt for grassy areas instead. 7. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke Be aware of the signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and vomiting. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately. 8. Opt for Water Activities Finding a pet-friendly beach or riverbank is a great way to enjoy the summer fun while also keeping you and your pets cool. Do your research to ensure the area is indeed pet-friendly and make sure the water is safe for your dog to swim before your adventure. Blue-green algae is a common toxin in Minnesota lakes and other non-flowing fresh bodies of water in the summer months. Alternatively, you can either buy a kiddie pool or rent a pet-friendly swimming pool to help your pet cool off! Conclusion Keeping your dog cool during the summer is essential for their health and happiness. By following these tips, you can ensure your furry friend enjoys the season safely. As a pet photographer in Minnesota, I love capturing those fun, playful moments with your pets. Remember, a cool dog is a happy dog; and happy dogs make for the best photos! • Dougie & Russell's Minnesota Summer Lakeside Photo Session

When living the Minnesota lake life, why wouldn't you have a dog photo session in your yard during the most beautiful golden hour? Dougie and Russel (and their humans) graciously welcomed me into their lovely yard for an evening of photos, chin scritches, and fetch. Some dogs take a minute or two to warm up to strangers, but these two were photo-ready from the moment I arrived and were so excited to show off their fetching abilities, both on land and in the water. This session involved a lot of play and fun for Dougie and Russell, which is my favorite thing to capture with my camera. Photo sessions don't need to be complicated. They can be a regular summer evening at home, just with a photographer there, too - of course! Minnesota Summer Lakeside Photo Session Here is a glimpse into Dougie and Russell's gallery from this beautiful Minnesota summer lakeside photo session.

The air is crisp, the trees turn vibrant shades of orange and red, and the perfect sweater weather means more opportunities to get outside with your dog! We've got you covered if you’re looking for fun, seasonal activities to enjoy with your pets. Whether your pup loves running, sniffing, or just chilling in the leaves, here are 10 fall activities to enjoy with your dog in the Twin Cities. 1. Explore the Fall Foliage with a Hike Minnesota is home to plenty of trails where you and your pup can take in the breathtaking fall colors. Popular spots like Minnehaha Falls, Lebanon Hills Regional Park, and Afton State Park offer dog-friendly trails with stunning views of the changing leaves. Don't forget to pack water and bring along some treats for your adventure buddy. Pro Tip: The Minnesota DNR has an amazing resource for fall foliage called the 'Fall Color Finder' which is live for 2024! They added a new feature that shows predictions based on previous years of data. 2. Go Apple Picking Together Several apple orchards around the Twin Cities allow dogs, making it a fun, unique outing. Minnetonka Orchards  (Minnetonka, MN) and Aamodt's Apple Farm  (Stillwater, MN) welcome pups on leashes, so you can wander the rows of trees, snack on fresh apples, and even enjoy some cider donuts. Your dog will love exploring the open spaces and sniffing the autumn air. Pro Tip: Always check online or call ahead to ensure the location is dog-friendly! Most locations also require leashed pets and for owners to pick up after them, of course! Be courteous guests so we can continue to bring our pups with us! 3. Have a Photoshoot in the Leaves Speaking of photos, autumn is the perfect backdrop for capturing those Insta-worthy moments with your dog. The golden sunlight and colorful leaves make for a dreamy setting. Whether you’re booking a professional pet photography session or just snapping some pictures during your daily walk, the Twin Cities’ parks are full of picture-perfect locations. 4. Check out my blog post highlighting the best pet-friendly fall events ! 7. Take a Stroll Around a Local Lake If your dog enjoys a good walk, Minnesota’s lakes are a wonderful fall destination. The cooler weather makes it easier to enjoy longer strolls, and there’s nothing like watching the sunset over the water at places like Lake Nokomis or Lake Harriet. It’s a peaceful way to enjoy fall together. 8. Enjoy a Backyard Bonfire If you’ve got the space, a backyard bonfire can be a cozy and relaxing way to spend an evening with your dog. Grab some blankets, roast marshmallows, and let your dog curl up by your side as the fire crackles. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they stay safe near the flames. 9. Take a Fall Camping Trip For the more adventurous pups, a fall camping trip might be just the thing. Cooler temps make hiking and camping more enjoyable for you and your dog, and Minnesota's state parks offer some beautiful spots to set up camp. Try Whitewater State Park (Altura, MN) or Itasca State Park (Park Rapids, MN) for dog-friendly campsites with lots of trails to explore. 10. • Sunflower Costume Contest for Dogs: 2024 Recap

For the third year in a row, Green Barn Garden Center (Isanti, MN) and I teamed up to put on a sunflower-themed costume contest for local dogs! We had a great turnout this year with fourteen pups strutting their stuff in various outfits. The winner receives a free mini photo session with me and a sunflower gift basket from Green Barn Garden Center. All participants and their people received free entry into the sunflower field for the evening of the competition, a free sunflower, and free web-resolution digital images of their dog's official photo from the contest. Costumes were judged based on creativity and staying on theme with sunflowers. Participants were encouraged to be as creative as possible, with the minimum entry being a bandana or similar. Here are the top five pups as voted on by a panel of outside judges from around the pet industry: Fifth Place: Manon Fourth Place: Martha Third Place: Biscotti Second Place: Molly First Place: Moose Of course, I can't leave out the rest of the pups that dressed up for their shot at the podium. Each one was so cute and deserves their moment in the sunshine. In alphabetical order, we have Bernie, Honey Bee, Juniper, Millie, Minnie Me, Phyllis, Savage, Willow, and Winnie. Thank you so much to Green Barn Garden Center for partnering with me again this year to put on this fun event! It's a great opportunity for pet parents to get creative and spend some quality time with their pups out in the sunflowers. I hope to see everyone again next August for another incredible competition and more super cute dressed-up pups! 🌻 The full gallery of photos from this year's event can be found here . • Canines for Clean Water: Water Quality Education for Pet Owners

During the month of August, I am joining the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board Naturalists in their mission to educate local pet owners about water quality and what we can all do to make a difference. There are four events across various Minneapolis Parks throughout the month that showcase a variety of organizations. I'd love to see you and your pets at an upcoming event! What is 'Canines for Clean Water'? The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is excited to present a series of Canines for Clean Water events at four Minneapolis parks this summer! These events will feature an awesome array of dog-themed activities, adoption/rescue opportunities, and information and giveaways from pet care and water quality organizations. Every Canines for Clean Water party is capped by an animal-themed Movie in the Park at sunset! It’s all free to attend and open to all! How Can Pet Owners Make a Difference? When pet waste isn’t picked up, it washes directly into nearby storm drains, negatively impacting water quality in lakes, ponds, creeks, and rivers. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes dog waste as a “non-point source of pollution” because it can pollute water bodies resulting in excessive algae and weed growth. Pet waste also pollutes water with harmful bacteria that can transmit disease to humans and cause beach closures. While dog waste isn’t the biggest pollutant to our water bodies, it is one of many small sources that add up to a bigger problem. Dog owners can help by picking up after their pups! Canines for Clean Water 2024 Events July 25: Loring Park Dog Costume Contest: Check in at 6:30 pm to participate in a dog costume contest! The contest starts at 6:45 pm. • Getting to Know Missy Pup & Co: Curated Goods for Dog Lovers

Have you heard of Missy Pup & Co? The answer is likely 'yes!' since Heather and her brand of curated goods for dog lovers is a local sensation. Missy Pup & Co has been featured on Twin Cities Live and is a staple at many local fairs and pet-friendly events around the cities. Not only does Heather curate the best apparel and goods for dogs and their humans, but she also creates relatable, funny, and heartfelt videos and shareable quotes on social media. Missy Pup & Co is a must-follow if you're on Instagram or Facebook . If you are new to Missy Pup & Co, let me first say I am so happy to be introducing you to one of my long-time local pet industry friends! Heather and her dog Missy are such a joy and I hope you learn something new about this amazing boutique from this interview! Can you tell us a bit about Missy Pup & Co and how it got started? Missy Pup & Co started shortly after my husband and I adopted our first dog, Missy. I immediately fell in love with her and being a dog owner. We adopted her in June of 2020, and she brought so much joy and purpose to my day during a tough season for me and for pretty much everyone going through their first global pandemic. (ha). I had some spare time on my hands and started looking for products for Missy and for me. I was looking for items that were more subtle/simple in nature and would stay in style for some time. I struggled to find things that felt like me, so it sparked an idea. I designed one sweatshirt, put it up on Missy's dogstagram page (because of course I had one for her), and waited to see what happened. Well, it sold out. I thought maybe I was onto something, so I started our website, curated some other products and we were a real-life business as of November 2020. What are some of the most popular products or services you offer for pet parents? Our most popular items are our apparel for humans and any sort of dog enrichment toy or mat . A lesser-known service I also offer is gift curation . I can piece together items from our shop to create the perfect gift for a friend or family member. Simply send me an email if you'd like help with a theme, gift ideas, packaging, etc. Apparel for Humans: Enrichment for Dogs: How do you select the products you offer? Do you have specific criteria? The products we offer are a mix of items I design myself, in addition to selecting items from other small businesses throughout the US. I put extra effort into sourcing and creating items that may not be found on Amazon, Etsy, or other large retailers, so what people find with us is unique and feels curated for them.  I believe in opting for higher quality goods and materials whether that's our apparel brand choices or who we work with to manufacture toys and enrichment mats.   How do you see the Twin Cities pet community evolving? We are so lucky to be in such a vibrant pet community as it is. Whether that is pet-friendly events, establishments, or the volume of shelter and rescue organizations serving our area, I see this only continuing to grow. I think we'll see more local stores pop up, and with many breweries creating kitchens in their spaces which means pets are allowed outside only, I could see this being an opportunity for new businesses to capitalize on in the winter especially. Overall, I don't really see it slowing down, but only getting stronger, more supportive, and continuing to thrive. What is your approach to ensuring the quality and safety of the products you sell? I spend hours upon hours scouring for reputable and reliable manufacturers and vendors who provide us with our products. Whether that's reading reviews, connecting with other small businesses on their experiences, digging into the behind-the-scenes of a vendor's manufacturing practices, etc, I care deeply about where our items come from. This is a big reason why I work with a lot of other small businesses on our products. Additionally, when it comes to pet toys and materials, we work with a handful of Certified B corporations who take care to ensure the use of quality dyes, fabrics, etc.  And of course, Missy is our certified product tester, so her reaction and experience with things often dictate whether I proceed with selling an item or not. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us personally), her toy-destroying days might be over, so she's less reliable for that. :) Can you share a memorable experience you've had with a customer or their pet? I am so fortunate to have the best community rallying around us here locally and beyond. Many of our customers have become friends and that has by far been one of the most rewarding parts of this business. My favorite experiences are at local events when people come up, look at our booth and our concept immediately clicks. "This aesthetic is so me." "Everything is so cute and the colors are drawing me in." "This is the cutest dog shirt I've ever seen." Hearing this from our customers just motivates me to keep going and improving.  Are there any upcoming projects or plans for your business that you're particularly excited about? I have goals to expand and begin doing custom items. Currently working on what this looks like, but it has been a long time coming and a highly requested offering from our customers. I'm hoping  to launch the custom section of our website for the holiday this year. Giving back to local rescues and organizations continues to be something I try to prioritize and I'm excited to continue to grow in the future as well. In 2023, we donated over $2500 in products and monetary donations to rescues and shelters in the Twin Cities. It is important to me as a small business to give to our community whenever it is possible, and I'm hoping to create more opportunities for that in the future. Tropicana Summer Collection Missy Pup & Co's Tropicana Summer Collection features palm trees, pineapples, coconuts, waves, and everything reminiscent of being on island time! Just like everything at Missy Pup & Co, there's something for both the dogs and the humans. I hope you've enjoyed getting to know Missy Pup & Co. Check out the shop for yourself and see what you can find for you, your pets, or a friend!

  • Kona's Cherry Blossom Photo Session

Few things signify the fleeting beauty of spring quite like cherry blossoms. We are lucky to have a beautiful display of them at Como Park in St. Paul, MN, and it was the perfect spring photo spot for Kona and Cassandra! When I say fleeting, I do mean it. The blossoms were first reported on Saturday and within a week, the petals were all on the ground. We were super lucky to sneak in a quick session on a busy weekday evening and capture some of my favorite spring photos so far! I wouldn't recommend this for reactive dogs, but everyone was very respectful despite the crowds and kept space for each other. Overall, it was a fun session and I'm already looking forward to getting out cherry blossom photo sessions again next spring!
