  • A Year of Adventure: Scruff Life Photography’s 2025 Recap

Reflecting on 2025, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible moments this year has brought. From capturing joyful, fleeting moments between pets and their people to exploring new creative opportunities, this year has been one of growth, connection, and adventure. Every session, every hike, and every behind-the-scenes project has reminded me why I love what I do. Scruff Life Photography wouldn’t be what it is without the amazing clients, our floofy friends, and a supportive community who trust me to tell their stories. This 2025 recap is my chance to reflect on the highlights, celebrate the milestones, and share the adventures that made this year unforgettable. Thank you for being part of this journey with me, and I can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store! Seasonal Favorites Community Impact Client Gratitude What's New? Behind-the-Scenes Celebrating & Remembering Looking Ahead to 202 6 Seasonal Favorites 2025 was such a memorable year for my pet photography business! Every session holds a special place in my heart, and I genuinely remember each one individually. I love thinking about my work through the lens of the seasons, so here’s a look at the sessions that I feel best exemplify each season: Winter I didn't have many sessions in the winter months in 2025, but this one with Lucy and Michelle was top-notch. I couldn't have asked for a more picturesque winter backdrop than a gorgeous and ever-changing sunset sky over a frozen lake in January. I took a series of photos of Lucy running across the lake towards Michelle and stitched them together in Photoshop to create the panorama scene. One of my all-time favorite photo sessions, no question. Spring I had so many amazing sessions this spring, and it's tough to choose just one favorite, but this session with assistance dog, Petra, was among my favorites! As much as I love winter, I am always very happy to have the return of color after a long, cold, gray winter! Summer If I had to choose my favorite session from the summer, I would say it was this incredible morning at the Lyndale Park Rose Garden in Minneapolis with Maria and Jackson. I don't think I can put into words how perfect this session felt both in the moment and after when editing and delivering these images. It was just stunning and so special. I will forever cherish this sweet duo. Fall Fall is always my favorite time of year, and there were SO many beautiful sessions this fall! My favorite one was this little impromptu session with Buzz and Mandy on a tamarack boardwalk. Tamaracks are one of my favorite trees, so finding this little gem of a spot right when the tamaracks were in full golden glory was a sign from the universe that I needed to capture some cute photos here. I'm so thankful for these two for helping me bring this vision to life! Community Impact Rescue Partnerships In 2025, I was honored to work with thirteen local animal rescue organizations to photograph adoptable pets in need of loving homes. One of the highlights of the year, as always, was the annual Tonkadale event in March, where I teamed up with my photographer friends, Kelly and Kirsten, to capture adorable portraits of dogs and rabbits. Throughout the year, I photographed 28 adoptable animals, helping to enhance their adoption profiles and increase their chances of finding forever families. Non-Profit Collaborations I continued my ongoing partnership with Helping Paws, Inc. , a local non-profit dedicated to enhancing people’s independence and quality of life through assistance dogs. I’ve had the privilege of using my photography skills to document their daily operations and special moments. These images help tell the story of the incredible work they do, inspiring donors, volunteers, and the community to support their mission. I shared more about my work with Helping Paws in this blog post: Capturing the Journey of Assistance Dogs in Training: A Year of Volunteering with Helping Paws . Client Gratitude I’m endlessly grateful for the incredible clients I had the privilege of working with this year. From new faces to familiar ones, each session has been a joy, and I cherish the opportunity to connect with every pet and their amazing people. Thank you all for trusting me to capture these meaningful moments — from welcoming a new family member to honoring those precious final moments together. This work holds deep meaning for me, and I take immense pride in preserving these memories for you. Here are a few kind words from my wonderful clients this year: "Lauren was great to work with. She worked with me on finding a chill location in light of my dogs changing/growing personality with other dogs/people. All the photos turned out amazing it was hard to pick the ones I wanted! I will definitely be using her again in the future!" - Annabelle, Sunny, & Finn "Sometimes you don’t want to worry about getting THE shot on vacation. As a fellow photographer, I enlisted Lauren to document some memories along Lake Superior with my soul dog. Lauren was a delight to work with - communicative, a North Shore expert, and a reactive dog-friendly photographer. She effortlessly captured mine and Luna’s bond. I will treasure these photos forever." - Lauren & Luna "Such an incredible experience! I booked a photoshoot for my senior rescue pup to celebrate a decade together and was blown away by the images. The photoshoot was very laid back, she had locations all scouted out beforehand and was wonderful with my girl. Images were done in a timely matter and she allowed me to do a payment plan for my additional pictures outside of my package. Highly recommend!" - Naomi & Sunshine "Thank you for capturing such great photos of Boss! Even though it was 100 degrees. I will cherish the photos of him forever. It's so neat seeing the photos come to life. I would recommend pet photos while on vacation!" - Leah & Boss "Lauren was amazing! With three dogs - including an older, sick dog - we asked Lauren to create a customized session in our backyard. It was perfect! She communicated exceptionally before our session, our three dogs all loved her, and the photos are gorgeous. Since our oldest dog was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, it was important for us to capture our family as it is today and to make our dog the star of the show. Lauren understood our wishes and gave us beautiful photos we will treasure forever." - Anna, Shelly, Bolt, & Brownie "Lauren was amazing to work with. I loved that there was a questionnaire to share any and all details about our dog, as well as a detailed session location list so we could choose the place right for our pup. She was kind enough to move our session date after scouting sites and letting us know the leaves were a few weeks away from fall colors. Lauren made the actual shoot effortless, and went with the flow as our dog sniffed and explored. I am so happy how she captured our little family, especially with how quickly time flies by with our furry friends." - Christina & Ember "Lauren captured spontaneous-looking and beautiful photos of us and our two senior pups in our wooded backyard. Lauren knew how to get the best out of our older and sometimes inattentive girls. She listened to our ideas for location and content and added her expert eye to come up with a great array of photos (we used one for our annual Christmas card!). Lauren's communication was timely and detailed at every point in the photo session process - from our initial contact through the final photo gallery - which made the entire experience very pleasant and easy. Lauren was great and we highly recommend Scruff Life Photography!" - Millie & Dot's Humans "I contacted Lauren after my senior dog's health started to decline to the point I knew I had to start thinking about end-of-life options. Lauren was able to schedule a session for that weekend at a place that was special to my dog and me, but not terribly convenient for her. Lauren was sensitive and compassionate with my dog's declining cognitive function and with how emotional I was during the session. My dog did not make it easy for Lauren, but she captured so many beautiful shots that I had trouble picking my favorites. Most importantly, Lauren's work captured the immense feelings that make up the bond I feel with my dog---Lauren has a true gift!" - Emily & Luna If we’ve had the chance to work together and you’d like to share your experience, I’d be so grateful for a review on Google! You can leave one here . What's New? Shooting My Dream North Shore Session In May, I traveled to Lutsen, MN, along the North Shore of Lake Superior, to capture a photo session for a longtime Instagram friend and her dog while they were in the area. This was very exciting for a number of reasons. I have been wanting to branch out to photograph people and their pets in more places in Minnesota. Cascade River State Park in Lutsen also holds sentimental value to me because it is where my husband and I got married in 2024. It is always such a joy to be back in the area and share it with more people! If you are interested in scheduling a photo session with me in a location outside of the Twin Cities area, please reach out, and we can chat about it! Tabling My First Event On a very sweltering July day, I tabled my very first vendor event! The kind folks at Pet Central Animal Hospital in Northeast Minneapolis, MN, invited me to join their 5th Annual Block Party event, celebrating their incredible clients and the community. Like I said, this was my first time participating in something like this, so I was entirely unprepared—especially given the extreme heat of the day—but I had a lot of fun meeting a lot of incredible people and their lovely pets who came out to join in the fun! I am considering actually becoming prepared for events like this in the future... so, maybe stay tuned for that. What would you want to see from me at a vendor event? Sending Personalized Thank You Notes 2025 marked the start of one of my favorite traditions thus far for my small business. I started sending personalized thank you notes to clients after sessions in the actual mail. I don't know about you, but I love receiving mail that isn't an advertisement or spam or a bill, so I thought it was important to add this little extra touch to my business. I really look forward to those days when I get to catch up on thank you notes from recent sessions and stop to remember those clients for a moment. Sometimes I had some cute Scruff Life Photography stickers in the envelopes... ☺️ Behind-the-Scenes When I wasn't capturing photos of your incredible pets, I was probably out exploring new trails, checking out a sweet pet-friendly cabin, or getting into a new hobby! 2025 took me to a few wonderful places, including the North Shore, Western Wisconsin, and Ely, MN. I was lucky enough to spend 12 days up on the North Shore across four different trips, including two cabin stays, one wall tent stay, and a good old-fashioned backpacking adventure (my very first!). I enjoyed two Wisconsin adventures with my family to get away from the hustle and bustle of 'real life' for a few days. Lastly, I had the incredible opportunity to partner with two awesome pet-friendly cabins in Ely, in September — Aurora Modern Cabin and Piney Woods Retreat. You can check out more about these lodging accommodations in this blog post: Cozy, Dog-Friendly Cabins for Your Next Winter Getaway . Out on the trails, I logged over 200 miles of hiking across Minnesota and western Wisconsin — more than I've ever done in a single year before. My friend, Brooke, and I set out with a goal to do our first backpacking trip together, and the Superior Hiking Trail just felt right, so part of my increase in miles was to prepare for that trip and the trip itself. We hiked 22 miles in two and a half days from Schroeder to Lutsen. I am already so excited to plan the next big adventure! In other news, I am proud to say that I read 53 books in 2025 after years of reading fewer than 10 books. A few of my favorites were The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, the Wayward Pines trilogy, also by Blake Crouch, The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. If you ever want to chat about books, I'm game! Celebrating & Remembering As I look back on 2025, I’m so grateful for all the incredible dogs and cats I had the privilege of photographing this year. Each session came with its own unique flavor and charm, and it is always such an honor to capture these special moments of you and your beloved pets. I also want to take a moment to honor the dogs and cats who crossed the rainbow bridge in 2025. Capturing the bond between pets and their people is such a meaningful part of my work, and I am always deeply touched when I have the opportunity to create lasting memories for families during their final moments together. To all the pet parents who said goodbye this year: thank you for trusting me with these tender and emotional sessions. Your pets will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I hope the photos we created together bring you comfort and joy as you remember the incredible love you shared. Here’s to the sweet dogs and cats who left paw prints on our hearts this year — they are dearly missed and will be cherished forever. 🌈 Looking Ahead to 2026 Capturing Winter Dog Sports (At All. Period.) After two very sad years off from photographing sled dog races due to unusual weather, I’m eager to get back to it in 2026! I’m hopeful for a more traditional winter season and have already planned to photograph some sled dog races, including the Gunflint Mail Run in Grand Marais, MN, and the Klondike Dog Derby in Excelsior, MN. I can’t wait to capture the energy, teamwork, and beauty of these incredible races once again! Dog-Friendly Cabin Partnerships In 2025, I partnered with two cabin owners to highlight their pet-friendly accommodations, a genre of photography I’ve truly fallen in love with since 2023. Exploring cozy cabins with my dogs, capturing their unique charm, and sharing those details with you has been so rewarding. These projects not only showcase great places to stay but also help pet parents find the perfect getaway ideas! In 2026, I hope to expand these partnerships, working with more cabin owners across Minnesota and the Midwest. If you’re a cabin owner interested in these services, I’d love to hear from you ! Exploring the Possibilities of Film Photography I purchased an old Canon film camera in 2025 and experimented with one roll of film over the course of the year. I am pushing myself to shoot more on film, even if it's only for personal projects. I want to get more comfortable shooting with film and prioritize bringing that camera out more. Wish me luck! What to Bring for Your Dog A little preparation can make your dog’s winter cabin stay cozy, safe, and stress-free. Here are a few essentials to pack before you hit the road: Warm layers: Even the fluffiest dogs can get chilly after a few hours in the snow. Bring a waterproof jacket or cozy sweater, especially if your dog has short fur or is sensitive to the cold. Paw protection: Snow, ice, and road salt can be tough on paws. Pack a set of booties or a paw balm like Musher’s Secret to keep them comfortable on your winter walks. A cozy bed or blanket: Most cabins have hard floors, so your dog will appreciate having their own warm, familiar spot to curl up after a day outside. Food, treats, and water: Don’t forget your dog’s regular food and a few extra treats for all those photo-worthy moments. A portable water bowl is handy for hikes or car rides. Towels and grooming wipes: Expect snowballs in fur, muddy paws, and the occasional wet shake indoors. Quick-dry towels and wipes make cleanup much easier. Long leash or tie-out: Not all cabins have fenced areas, so a long lead lets your dog safely explore while you relax by the fire or enjoy the view. Favorite toys: Pack a few chew toys or puzzle feeders to keep your dog entertained during cozy indoor evenings. ID tags and safety gear: Always make sure your dog’s ID tag is up to date, and consider a reflective collar or light for nighttime potty breaks. With a little planning, your pup will be just as comfortable and happy as you are. Ready for winter walks, fireside naps, and everything in between. Whether you’re chasing fresh snow, quiet mornings by the fire, or star-filled skies, these dog-friendly cabins offer the perfect setting for a winter adventure with your best friend. Pack your bags, grab your pup, and head to one of these cozy escapes for an unforgettable winter getaway! Disclosure: I had the opportunity to stay at each of these cabins for free in exchange for sharing my photos and experience on social media. All opinions shared in this post are entirely my own. • 10 Winter Activities to Enjoy with Your Dog in the Twin Cities

Winter in Minnesota transforms the Twin Cities into a snowy wonderland, making it the perfect season for cozy and adventurous outings with your dog. From snow-filled fun to warm indoor activities, there are plenty of ways to enjoy winter while creating memories with your furry friend. Whether your pup loves frolicking in the snow, snuggling up indoors, or exploring the great outdoors, here are 10 winter activities to enjoy with your dog in the Twin Cities. 1. Go Winter Hiking or Snowshoeing Bundle up and hit the trails for a snowshoeing or hiking adventure with your dog. Minnesota has plenty of dog-friendly trails that are just as beautiful in the winter as they are in other seasons. Check out Elm Creek Park Reserve (Maple Grove, MN) or William O'Brien State Park (Marine on St. Croix, MN) for scenic routes where your pup can sniff out new adventures. Pro Tip:  Invest in paw balm or dog booties to protect your pup’s paws from ice and salt, and always pack water for both of you — even in the cold! 2. Visit an Off-Leash Dog Park or Book a Sniffspot Let your dog burn off some energy and embrace the winter fun at one of the Twin Cities’ off-leash dog parks or a local Sniffspot . Minnehaha Dog Park (Minneapolis, MN) and Battle Creek Dog Park (Maplewood, MN) offer plenty of space for pups to romp and play in the snow. If your dog prefers a more private experience, Sniffspots provide fenced, reservation-only spaces where they can explore without the worry of encountering other dogs or people. Pro Tip:  Keep a towel in your car to dry off your pup after playtime — wet fur and winter temps don’t mix! 3. Schedule a Winter Photoshoot Capture the magic of the season with a snowy photoshoot. Freshly fallen snow and the soft light of a winter day make for a stunning backdrop. Whether you book a professional session or take your own photos, the snowy Twin Cities parks are full of Insta-worthy locations. Pro Tip : For the best lighting, aim for early morning or late afternoon when the winter sun is soft and golden! 4. Visit a Dog-Friendly Brewery, Restaurant, or Café Escape the cold and warm up at a dog-friendly brewery or café. Many local spots have indoor areas or heated patios where your pup is welcome. Try Unleashed Hounds and Hops (Minneapolis, MN) or Forgotten Star Brew Co. (Fridley, MN) for a cozy outing. Pro Tip:  Double-check the establishment's dog policies to confirm that dogs are allowed inside or on the patio during the winter season. 5. Try a Winter Sport Together For energetic pups who thrive on adventure, dog-powered winter sports are an exciting way to embrace the season together. From skijoring and mushing to fat tire biking and canicross, there are plenty of options to explore. Local organizations like Jack and the Pack offer winter classes to help you and your dog get started with these thrilling activities. Pro Tip: Winter sports often require specialized gear and training for both you and your pup. Ensure your dog is physically ready for the challenge, and connect with a local group or trainer for guidance and advice! 6. Attend a Dog-Friendly Winter Festival The Twin Cities come alive in winter with festivals that welcome dogs to join the fun. From parades and dazzling ice sculptures to food trucks and seasonal activities, events like the St. Paul Winter Carnival offer plenty to enjoy with your pup. For a pet-focused outing, check out Furry Friend Weekend in Stillwater, MN, held in mid-December—a perfect winter adventure for you and your furry companion! Need inspiration? Check out The Ultimate Guide to Twin Cities Pet Events This Winter ( 2025-26) . Pro Tip:  Pack a collapsible water bowl and some high-value treats to keep your dog hydrated and happy amid the excitement. If the weather is extra chilly, consider bundling your pup in a cozy coat or booties to keep them warm and comfy! 7. Play in the Snow Sometimes the simplest activities are the most fun. Head to your backyard or a nearby park to let your dog enjoy zoomies in the snow, chase snowballs, or even build a snow pup! Pro Tip:  Keep an eye out for snow that’s too deep for your dog to navigate easily and ensure they’re dressed warmly if they’re a short-haired breed or prone to getting cold. 8. Take a Winter Road Trip If you’re up for an adventure, explore one of Minnesota’s charming small towns or winter-friendly destinations with your dog. Duluth’s Lakewalk is gorgeous in the winter, and nearby Jay Cooke State Park offers stunning snowy trails for you and your pup. Pro Tip:  Before hitting the road, stock your vehicle with winter safety essentials like extra blankets, a first aid kit, water, snacks (for both you and your dog), and a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction in case of ice. Don’t forget to pack a towel and coat for your pup to keep them warm and dry after outdoor adventures! 9. Visit a Dog-Friendly Store When the weather is too frigid for outdoor adventures, head to a dog-friendly store for a warm, indoor outing. It’s a great way to give your pup some exercise, practice their training, and enjoy a change of scenery. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up treats, toys, or other goodies for your four-legged friend. Pro Tip : Pet stores, hardware stores, and outdoor-focused retailers often welcome dogs, but always check ahead to confirm their pet policy. Be courteous and clean up after your dog to help keep these spaces welcoming for all pups! 10. Book a Cozy Winter Cabin Getaway Trade the city’s hustle and bustle for a peaceful winter escape that both you and your dog will adore. Minnesota and its surrounding areas boast plenty of pet-friendly cabins perfect for a snowy retreat. Imagine cozying up by the fire, strolling through serene forest trails, or playing with your pup in a snow-dusted yard. A winter cabin getaway is the ultimate way to relax, recharge, and strengthen the bond with your four-legged companion. Pro Tip: Look for cabins with pet-friendly perks like fenced or spacious yards, nearby parks and trails, or provided dog essentials like bowls and beds. Need inspiration? Ely’s trails, lakes, and forests are calling. Dog-Friendly Adventures Ely is made for adventure, and your dog is welcome every step of the way. With its endless lakes, quiet forest trails, and wide-open skies, this is the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and make lasting memories together. Whether you’re exploring the water, hitting the trails, or simply taking in the views from the car, Ely offers countless ways for you and your pup to connect with nature. Canoeing For many visitors, paddling is the quintessential Ely experience — and dogs are welcome to join the adventure. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and the surrounding lakes are open to four-legged explorers, making this one of the most dog-friendly paddling destinations in the Midwest. If your dog is new to being in a canoe, start small on calmer lakes like Bear Head, Shagawa, or Fall Lake before tackling longer routes. Bring a canine life jacket, keep your gear balanced, and pack extra towels for wet paws and happy splashes. Dogs should always remain under control and on a leash during portages and rest breaks to protect wildlife. For a taste of wilderness without the multi-day commitment, consider a day trip into South Kawishiwi River or Burntside Lake. Both offer scenic shorelines, quiet coves, and a true Boundary Waters feel just minutes from town. Pro tip : Bring a non-slip mat or foam pad for your canoe. It helps dogs stay comfortable and stable on the water. Scenic Drives If you’d rather keep your paws (and tires) on solid ground, Ely’s scenic drives are the perfect way to explore the Northwoods at your own pace. The Echo Trail (County Road 116) is a must-do. A 60-mile stretch of winding forest road that leads deep into wilderness country. Along the way, you’ll pass sparkling lakes, overlooks, trailheads, and picnic pullouts ideal for quick breaks and sniff sessions. Stop at Fenske Lake Campground for a short leg stretch or continue on to Big Moose Lake Road for a quieter route. The drive offers a real taste of solitude and is especially beautiful in fall, when the aspen and birch trees turn gold. Other great drives include Highway 1 toward Isabella. Don’t forget your camera. You’ll likely spot loons, deer, or even a fox crossing the road. Or maybe even a moose, if you're really lucky! Winter Adventures Ely doesn’t hibernate when the snow falls; it thrives in it. If your dog loves the cold, winter in Ely might be their favorite season. Snowshoeing and skijoring are popular pastimes, and many of the area’s trails welcome dogs. Head to Bear Head Lake State Park for peaceful snowshoe loops through tall pines, or try Trezona Trail, a 4-mile loop around Miner’s Lake that’s well-traveled and great for dogs new to winter sports. Adventurous teams can also explore sections of the Hidden Valley Recreation Area, where local skiers and mushers train throughout the season. When temperatures dip low, be mindful of paw protection. Booties or paw balm can make snowy outings more comfortable. And nothing beats ending a winter day curled up by the cabin fire with a tired, happy dog at your feet. Swimming Spots When the sun’s out and the air smells like pine, few things beat a lakeside swim. Many of Ely’s lakes offer easy shoreline access where dogs can wade or paddle. Bear Head Lake State Park is one of the best choices, with clear water and gentle entry points. Dogs must remain leashed, but they’re welcome to splash near the non-designated swim areas or cool off along the trails. Fall Lake is another great spot for swimming and picnicking, with a mix of sandy and rocky shoreline perfect for playtime. If you prefer solitude, explore small access points along the Echo Trail or Burntside Lake. You’ll often find secluded coves where your pup can dip their paws in undisturbed. Always check signage before entering the water, as some beaches and boat launches may have restrictions. Pack a towel, bring fresh water, and plan for a post-swim brush. Ely’s lakes are clean, but the surrounding trails can be muddy after a good splash. Parks & Trails Lake Vermilion - Soudan Underground Mine State Park Explore above-ground trails like the Miner's Trail or Onamani Overlook Trail with your dog (note: dogs aren’t allowed in the underground mine tours). From learning about local wildlife to exploring downtown shops and galleries, these experiences give you a deeper connection to Ely’s wild and creative spirit. Things to Do in Ely Without Your Dog While Ely is wonderfully dog-friendly, there are a few experiences best enjoyed solo, especially if your pup is napping back at the cabin after a morning hike. These spots give you a deeper look into the Northwoods’ wildlife, culture, and history. North American Bear Center Learn about Minnesota’s black bears at this one-of-a-kind educational center. You’ll find live bears in spacious forested habitats, interactive exhibits, and knowledgeable naturalists who share insight into bear behavior, ecology, and conservation. It’s a fascinating and family-friendly stop that helps dispel myths about these incredible animals. International Wolf Center Just down the road, the International Wolf Center offers an immersive look into the world of wolves. You’ll meet the resident ambassador wolves, explore exhibits on pack dynamics and wolf-human coexistence, and maybe even catch a feeding or enrichment session. This is one of Ely’s most popular attractions, especially for anyone curious about the wildlife that makes northern Minnesota so unique. Ely Arts & Heritage Center Located in the historic Pioneer Mine buildings, this community hub celebrates Ely’s history through rotating art exhibits, music events, and heritage displays. It’s a great place to get a sense of Ely’s creative spirit and mining roots. Shopping in Downtown Ely If you love browsing local shops, downtown Ely is full of small businesses worth exploring. Pop into Piragis Northwoods Company for outdoor gear, Mealey’s Gift & Sauna Shop for quirky souvenirs, or Ely Greenstone Jewelry for locally made art pieces. Some stores have dog-friendly patios or will welcome your pup inside if it’s quiet, but always ask first, or plan a solo stroll while your dog relaxes. Hidden Gems Nearby For something truly off the beaten path, check out the Ely Folk School, where you can take short workshops in traditional crafts like woodworking, blacksmithing, or nature journaling. It’s a perfect way to slow down and connect with Ely’s creative and cultural side. Ely has a way of balancing wild adventure with quiet discovery. While most experiences here welcome your dog by your side, a few spots invite you to slow down and explore a different side of the Northwoods, one filled with history, art, and an up-close look at the wildlife that makes this region so special. Please note: Whiteside Park is a pet-free zone, so plan to leave your dog at home for this one. This three-day event highlights local artists, crafters, and food vendors, offering everything from pottery and woodcrafts to pulled pork sandwiches and fresh-baked pies. If loud noises are a trigger, plan your visit outside of festival weekends like the Blueberry Art Festival or the Ely Winter Festival. Traveling with a reactive dog doesn’t have to mean missing out. • Sunflower Costume Contest for Dogs: 2025 Recap

For the fourth year in a row, Green Barn Garden Center (Isanti, MN) and I teamed up to put on a sunflower-themed costume contest for local dogs! We had a great turnout this year with fourteen pups strutting their stuff in various outfits. The winner receives a free photo session with me and a sunflower gift basket from Green Barn Garden Center. All participants and their people received free entry into the sunflower field for the evening of the competition and a free web-resolution digital image of their dog's official photo from the contest. Costumes were judged based on creativity and staying on theme with sunflowers. Participants were encouraged to be as creative as possible, with the minimum entry being a bandana or similar. Here are the top five pups as voted on by a panel of outside judges from around the pet industry: Fifth Place: Buffy Fourth Place: Milton Third Place: Finn Second Place: Ruby First Place: Molly Of course, I can't leave out the rest of the pups that dressed up for their shot at the podium. Each one was so cute and deserves their moment in the sunshine. In no particular order, we have Loki, Winston Benelli, Honey Bee, Venti, Phyllis, Marteeni, Millie, and Pascal. Thank you so much to Green Barn Garden Center for partnering with me again this year to put on this fun event! It's a great opportunity for pet parents to get creative and spend some quality time with their pups out in the sunflowers. I hope to see everyone again next August for another incredible competition and more super cute dressed-up pups! 🌻 The full gallery of photos from this year's event can be found here . The sunflowers are black oil type, used for bird seed. We also grow cut flower types in smaller quantities. In recent years, we have had more calls to visit the field for photos and to enjoy. With the increased interest, we created a parking area in the field in 2019 with a self-serve donation box to help with signage and maintenance of the space. Due to increased demand, we began staffing the field in 2020 and offering more amenities for the safety and comfort of visitors. We began an admission charge so we can continue opening the field and add features each year, and increase our sunflower acreage! We use our irrigated land to allow a healthy, uniform crop to enjoy."
