The valley's dramatic scenery was shaped over millions of years by volcanic activity, ancient seas, and powerful glaciers that carved deep gorges and exposed towering sandstone and basalt formations. Today, those geologic features create unforgettable views at parks like Interstate Park, while miles of wooded trails wind through state parks, forests, and conservation areas. Along the way, hikers can discover waterfalls, overlooks, quiet streams, and abundant wildlife in every season. There are dozens of trails to choose from at this park, and you really can't go wrong! Information: The North River Trail encircles an open field, allowing hikers to observe red-tailed hawks, eastern bluebirds, and a variety of butterflies feasting on local flowers. The trail winds through a moist red maple forest and crosses a boardwalk in one section, while another leads to an observation platform where hikers can take in the sights and sounds of the North River. As hikers ascend, they will be surrounded by towering white pines and hemlocks. During migration periods, hikers see many waterfowl near the little lakes. Hikers will also be rewarded with open meadows and crystal-clear streams. Along the trail, bald eagles can frequently be spotted perched atop dead trees. Permit / Parking: Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permit required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: The Lumberyard Pub is a casual dining pub serving a large selection of beers, wine, and cocktails in a dog-friendly environment. Visitors to the former lumberyard with Fido in tow can sit at one of its many outdoor tables to enjoy a meal alongside their canine. The Lumberyard Pub requests that furry friends remain leashed during their visit. Ahlgren Wildlife Preserve — St. Croix Falls, WI Location / Town: Ahlgren Wildlife Preserve & Recreation Area, St. Croix Falls, WI Recommended Trail: Ahlgren Wildlife Preserve Loop, an easy 0.6-mile loop trail Information: This 172.6-acre peaceful parcel of land is set aside to preserve it as it may have been found many centuries ago. Enjoy the hiking trails, water, wildlife, and woods. The preserve is dedicated to the Ahlgren family and to all of the others who have made Polk County and Wisconsin great. The Park is used primarily as a walking and wildlife viewing area. Permit / Parking: No permits or parking fees required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: Deer Lake Winery is a beautiful dog-friendly establishment located in St. Croix Falls, WI. Dogs are welcome to join you at a table under the covered outdoor canopy. Arcola Bluffs — Stillwater, MN Location / Town: Arcola Bluffs Day Use Area, Stillwater, MN Recommended Trail: Arcola Bluffs Trail, about 3 miles Information: Explore the scenic beauty of the St. Croix Valley on this rolling trail through woods and prairie. You will head toward the river, where the forest opens up to reveal the towering Arcola High Bridge. Remember to stay off the railroad tracks as the bridge is still active. The southernmost part of the trail tends to be overgrown during the summer season. Permit / Parking: No permits or parking fees required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: Stillwater is an incredibly dog-friendly place. Banning State Park — Sandstone, MN Location / Town: Banning State Park, Sandstone, MN Recommended Trail: Wolf Creek Falls via Quarry Loop and Wolf Creek Trail, an easy to moderate 3.6-mile trail Information: This trail takes you to Wolf Creek Falls in Banning State Park. The trail passes by the Banning State Park Campground, offering nice river views, rapids, and a little waterfall with rock steps at the end. You'll also see large sandstone features along the Kettle River and find little plaques telling you about the history of the quarry. Permit / Parking: Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permit required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: It might be time for you and your pup to head to the Doc's, Doc's Sports Bar and Grill, that is. Outside, you'll find five pet-friendly picnic tables and four tables under the gazebo for dogs and their owners. Locally owned and operated, this sports bar boasts a full menu of steaks, burgers, appetizers, soups, and salads. Cascade Falls — Osceola, WI Location / Town: Osceola, WI Recommended Trail: Cascade Falls and Eagle Bluff Loop, a moderately difficult 1.2-mile loop Information: This loop begins with a descent down a large staircase into Wilke Glen, leading hikers directly to the base of the stunning, 25-foot Cascade Falls. From the waterfall, the trail follows Osceola Creek to the St. Croix River before turning into a steep, root-laden switchback climb up Eagle Bluff. Permit / Parking: No permits or parking fees required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: The Watershed Cafe is a pet-friendly eatery in Osceola, WI that welcomes leashed dogs at outdoor tables. Glen Park Trail — River Falls, WI Location / Town: Glen Park, River Falls, WI Recommended Trail: Glen Park Trail, under 2 miles, moderate difficulty Information: Glen Park is a 40-acre park located southwest of the downtown district. The park was established in July of 1898. It is the City’s oldest park and even had a zoo at one point. Some highlights of the park include trails connecting to the Kinnickinnic Pathway to the north, River Hills Park to the south, and the Kinnickinnic River. Permit / Parking: No permits or parking fees required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: Bring your pup to Swinging Bridge Brewing Company in River Falls, WI. This dog-friendly bar invites two- and four-legged friends to sit together at one of the outdoor tables on the seasonal patio. Governor Knowles State Forest — Grantsburg, WI Location / Town: Governor Knowles State Forest, Grantsburg, WI Recommended Trail: Sandrock Cliffs, an easy 2.8-mile trail Information: This 55-mile-long forest in northwestern Wisconsin parallels the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and offers camping, paddling, hiking, horseback riding, biking, hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling opportunities. Three campgrounds (St. Croix, Trade River Equestrian and Sioux Portage Group) and nine primitive backpack campsites are found within 32,500 wooded acres. Permit / Parking: Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Permit required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: Burnett Dairy has a couple of pet-friendly picnic tables outside in Grantsburg, WI. You and Fido can choose from a huge array of fresh cheese, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, fried cheese curds, pizza, and ice cream. Dogs are not allowed inside, so it's best to have someone come with you and wait outside while you order. Interstate State Park — St. Croix Falls, WI Location / Town: Interstate State Park, St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin Recommended Trail: Pothole & Horizon Rock Trail, a moderately difficult 1.8-mile trail. There are miles of trails at this park. Feel free to explore more! Information: Enjoy this fantastic short trail around Interstate Park, which is popular for rock climbing and hiking. You get fantastic views of the St. Croix River from multiple overlooks. This trail is a great option for families looking to explore this area. There are several other popular trail options from this trailhead. Permit / Parking: Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Permit required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: Deer Lake Winery is a beautiful dog-friendly establishment located in St. Croix Falls, WI. Dogs are welcome to join you at a table under the covered outdoor canopy. Interstate State Park — Taylors Falls, MN Location / Town: Interstate State Park, Taylors Falls, Minnesota Recommended Trail: Walter F. Mondale River Trail and Railroad Trail Loop, a moderately difficult 3.1-mile trail. There are miles of trails at this park. Feel free to explore more! Information: This trail begins at the Interstate State Park Visitors Center, where parking and restrooms are available. From here, the route meanders alongside the St. Croix River as it heads towards Interstate Park Campground. The trail then follows the Railroad Trail around Sandstone Point, winding its way through gorgeous bushland back toward Taylor Falls. Mosquitoes can be ruthless in spring and summer, so come prepared with bug spray. Steep stairs along the way add to the trail's difficulty. Permit / Parking: Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permit required Nearby Dog-Friendly Spot: Drive-In, located in Taylors Falls, MN, offers burgers and floats that the locals love. You and your pups can enjoy a meal at one of the pet-friendly tables outside. With so many animals in rescues and shelters across the United States all vying for the attention of potential adopters, a quality photo can be the difference between being overlooked and finding a forever home. For the past several years, I've teamed up with my fellow pet photographer friends, Kelly of K Schulz Photography and Kirsten of KME Photography , to host a free foster photo event. The goal of our event each year is to collaborate to enhance the profiles of as many adoptable animals as possible throughout a single morning. This was my fourth year working with Kelly and Kirsten, and we partnered with nine different rescue organizations in the Twin Cities to photograph 22 adoptable animals, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and one ferret. The employees are always so welcoming and excited to meet the adoptable animals. Tonkadale plays a big role in helping us create a safe and welcoming space for everyone. Treats for All: Provided by NutriSource & Finley's Back for another year, we had treats to provide to all the foster animals from two local Minnesota pet brands, NutriSource and Finley's ! Everyone is always so grateful to receive these tasty treats for their adoptable pets, and we enjoy sharing the love! Kelly (K Schulz Photography), Lauren (Scruff Life Photography), and Kirsten (KME Photography) Meet the Adoptable Animals from This Foster Photo Event Minnesota Pocket Pet Rescue Scoots McGee Meet Scoots McGee, a sweet ferret born around September 4, 2022, who is currently looking for a loving home with other ferret companions. Scoots is still settling into foster care, so his foster family is continuing to learn more about his personality, favorite toys, and daily habits. He thrives with a flexible daily routine. Scoots does have adrenal disease and insulinoma, which are being managed with daily medications and a Suprelorin implant, and he’s doing well with his care. With no known behavioral concerns, Scoots is simply looking for a caring home that already has ferrets where he can bond, play, and enjoy life as part of a ferret family. Learn more about Scoots McGee here. Great Dane Rescue Dax Meet Dax, a 4-year-old pup with a playful spirit and a big heart. While he’s technically an adult, his foster mom says he sometimes plays like he’s two — meaning he still knows how to have a lot of fun. Dax loves getting outside for walks and does great at the dog park, where he enjoys making new dog friends. After he’s had time to stretch his legs, he’s happy to settle in at home for some well-earned lounging, whether that’s on the couch (when allowed) or curled up in a cozy dog bed. Dax is a loyal “shadow dog” who loves being close to his people and thrives with clear guidance and a confident leader. He’s been growing more confident every day in his foster home and is eager to find a forever family who will continue helping him shine. Learn more about Dax here. Lola Meet Lola, a joyful and playful girl who brings fun and heart to every day. She loves zooming around the yard, playing fetch, and showing off her silly personality, but she’s just as happy settling down for a cozy night on her dog bed with a blanket. Lola is crate-trained, well-mannered at home, and enjoys watching the world go by from the window without barking at the neighborhood activity. She’s also a wonderful companion on the go—riding calmly in the car and making great progress on walks while staying relaxed around people, dogs, and squirrels. Sweet, smart, and affectionate, Lola is the perfect mix of playful energy and gentle companionship, and she’s sure to bring lots of love and laughter to the lucky family who adopts her. Learn more about Lola here. No Dog Left Behind Brody Meet Brody, a gentle Great Pyrenees mix with a heart as big as his paws. Born around January 2025, this resilient boy has already overcome a difficult start in life after being rescued from severe neglect. Despite everything he’s been through, Brody has remained incredibly sweet, patient, and trusting. He’s calm and kind with other dogs, great with kids, and even ignores cats. Brody walks nicely on a leash, rides well in the car, and settles comfortably in a kennel, making him an easygoing companion both at home and on adventures. Quietly affectionate and grateful for the love he’s receiving now, Brody is ready to leave his past behind and find a forever family who will give him the comfort, stability, and care he deserves. Learn more about Brody here. Timmy Meet Timmy, a playful and affectionate 7-month-old terrier mix who’s ready to steal your heart. Timmy is deaf and carries the blue merle gene, so he’ll need routine eye checks, but it doesn’t slow him down one bit—he’s full of curiosity, joy, and love. He’s kennel and potty-trained, walks nicely on a leash, and enjoys car rides. Timmy loves running, playing with other dogs, collecting every toy he can find, and enthusiastically greeting his people. He would thrive in a home with a confident canine companion who can help guide him as he continues learning about the world. With a little patience and extra attention, Timmy will reward his future family with endless affection and loyal companionship. Learn more about Timmy here. Ruff Start Rescue Cardi Meet Cardi, a sweet and spirited 9-year-old mixed-breed who proves that age is just a number. Loyal, intelligent, and full of personality, Cardi loves tennis balls (sometimes two at a time!), walks, puzzle toys, and cozy cuddle sessions with her favorite humans. She’s house-trained, knows several commands, and walks beautifully on a leash, making her an easy and fun companion. After losing her previous owner and narrowly escaping euthanasia, Cardi hasn’t let her past dim her bright, loving spirit — she still believes every person is a potential friend. Cardi would thrive as the only dog in the home, where she can soak up all the attention, and she’s part of the Seniors for Seniors program, which offers senior adopters a reduced adoption fee. This chatty, affectionate girl is ready to start her next chapter with a family who will cherish her big heart and joyful energy. Learn more about Cardi here. Safe Hands Rescue Joss Meet Joss, a tiny “nugget” with a big heart and an even bigger wiggle-butt greeting. She can be a little shy when meeting new people, but once she feels safe her brave and playful personality quickly shines through. Joss loves being part of the fun and is eager to bond with her people. She’s looking for a patient family who will help build her confidence and give her the love she needs to continue blossoming. Diving Deeper: Take a Look Behind the Scenes Here are a few behind-the-scenes moments from the morning. Lots of cute adoptable animals and big smiles. We made silly noises and threw treat bags around. We all crouched low and tested our flexibility to get the best angles. In early February, I made my way north to photograph one of Minnesota’s most beloved winter traditions: the Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race . If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I love photographing working dogs and dog sports, and sled dogs in particular hold a special place in my heart. There’s something incredible about seeing teams of dogs doing what they were bred and trained to do, especially in a landscape that feels truly wild. This trip took my friend and occasional assistant photographer, Brooke, and me all the way up to Grand Marais, a small North Shore town that becomes even more magical in the winter. Snow-covered trees, crisp air, and the excitement of race weekend made the entire experience unforgettable. Following the Trails of Our Past The Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race celebrates the long history of dog sledding in northern Minnesota. Long before snowmobiles and modern transportation, sled dogs were essential for carrying mail and supplies through remote wilderness areas. This race honors that history while showcasing modern sled dog teams and the incredible bond between mushers and their dogs. The race typically covers about 60+ miles along the historic Gunflint Trail, with teams completing two legs separated by a mandatory layover. Mushers run teams of up to ten dogs, and each dog plays an important role in getting the sled down the trail safely and efficiently. For spectators, it’s a chance to witness athletic, enthusiastic dogs powering through some of the most beautiful winter scenery Minnesota has to offer. Credit: Gunflint Mail Run The Journey North Driving up to the North Shore in February is always an adventure. The farther north you go, the quieter things become... fewer cars, deeper snow, and that feeling of stepping into true winter. By the time we reached Grand Marais, the landscape had transformed into a snowy wonderland. The tall red and white pines were dusted with snow, the air was crisp and cold, and there was an excited buzz around the Gunflint Trail in preparation for the race. To ensure we were close to all of the race action, we stayed at a cabin on Poplar Lake close to the race start, layover, and finish. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend a stay at a cabin (or campground in the warmer months) along the Gunflint Trail. I love Grand Marais, but the Gunflint is truly its own unique world worth exploring. Last year, Brooke and I made plans to photograph this race, too. We booked a cabin and made all of our preparations, but the race was postponed due to a lack of snow. We ended up making the trip anyway and had a great time driving all along the Gunflint Trail, hiking, and exploring the beautiful winter landscape. I'm glad that the race worked out this year and we were able to witness and photograph this race, finally! For me, trips like this are part photography, part experience. I love spending a long weekend exploring the area and getting a sense of the surroundings before the action begins. Race Day Energy Race morning was cold (as expected for February in northern Minnesota), but the energy at the start line made it easy to forget the temperature. Sled dogs were barking, jumping, and pulling with excitement. That classic sled dog enthusiasm is both chaotic and amazing to witness. If you’ve never heard a group of sled dogs before a race start, it’s loud, joyful, and full of anticipation. From a photography perspective, there were so many moments happening at once: Mushers preparing their teams Dogs leaning into their harnesses Frosty breath in the morning air Snow kicking up as teams launched onto the trail One of my favorite things to photograph is the moment right before a team takes off. The focus, excitement, and connection between the dogs and their musher really comes through. Mushers Who Competed in the Race One of the things that makes the Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race so special is the incredible group of mushers who come together to compete. Each team brings their own story, kennel, and connection with their dogs. It was amazing to watch them prepare, run the trail, and care for their teams throughout the race. Every musher had a slightly different style, and it was clear how much trust and teamwork existed between each musher and their dogs. So Many Amazing Women on the Trail One thing that really stood out to me this year was how many women, including young women, were competing in the race. It was inspiring to see such strong representation in the mushing community. From experienced mushers to newer competitors, there was so much skill, determination, and passion on the trail. As someone who spends a fair bit of time photographing working dogs and dog sports, it was especially meaningful to witness and document these teams. The leadership, confidence, and connection between these mushers and their dogs was incredible to see up close. It’s moments like this that remind me how special the sled dog community is. It is supportive, dedicated, and deeply connected to both the dogs and the history of this sport. Photographing Sled Dogs in Action Sled dog races move fast, both literally and visually, so capturing them requires a different approach than many pet portrait sessions. A few things I focused on while photographing the race: Fast shutter speeds to freeze motion Positioning where teams would pass with clean backgrounds Capturing expressions and teamwork between dogs Including the winter landscape to tell the full story We also had fun experimenting with various focal lengths to photograph each team in diverse ways. Brooke utilized a wider lens (24-70mm), while I opted for a telephoto lens (70-200mm), allowing us to capture the same scene from different perspectives. Furthermore, I briefly used my drone over a lake to obtain a bird's eye view of a few teams. These small moments contribute to narrating the race's story beyond just the action. Behind the Scenes Moments Some of my favorite moments from this trip weren't even the photos, but the downtime and the in-between moments. After catching the race start at Trail Center, we drove down the trail to witness the teams mush through the woods at a checkpoint with a group of volunteers. It was fun to experience this part of the race, away from the crowd at the start and with some residents of the area. We chatted about cabins, Gunflint Trail memories, and our lives outside of this peaceful nature bubble. After spending a few hours outside freezing our toes and fingers off, we ventured back to our cabin for lunch. Lucky for us, we had a great view of the teams crossing Poplar Lake while we enjoyed a hot meal by the fireplace. Once we were full and warmed up, we ventured out onto the lake to catch the teams setting out for the second leg of their race. By this point, the teams had become pretty spread out, so this involved a lot of patience as we waited. We ended up venturing out for one final round of photos later on when the last of the daylight was still in the sky, and the leaders were coming back across Poplar Lake for the home stretch. It didn't take long for us to call it an evening, though, since the cloudy skies and setting sun made it quite dark. We continued to watch the racers cross the lake throughout the evening over dinner at Poplar Haus (amazing food, highly recommend). As we were enjoying our delicious food, we noticed a team coming straight towards the restaurant, instead of going across the lake. While we watched, the musher lost control of their sled, and the dogs steadily made their way towards us. A small crowd in the restaurant watched on as Brooke and I grabbed our coats and ran outside to see if we could help. We reached the team of dogs pulling their unmanned sled at the boat launch and grabbed the sled. The musher was working her way towards us as we waited for instructions. A few more people from inside came out to help, and we all managed to get the dogs turned around and get the musher back on her way out across Poplar to finish the race. An unexpected finish to a very exciting day! The Winter Landscape One thing that always stands out to me about photographing sled dog races in northern Minnesota is how beautiful the environment is. The Gunflint Trail is one of my favorite places in the world, especially in winter. The winding road leads through some of Minnesota's most rugged and untouched terrain. Snow-covered forests, winding trails, and soft winter light create the perfect setting for storytelling through photography. I tried to capture not just the race itself, but the feeling of being there. The stillness of the woods between teams passing through, the light filtering through snowy trees, and the scale of the landscape compared to the teams moving across it. Community and Tradition Events like this are powered by volunteers, local businesses, and people who deeply care about preserving sled dog traditions. You can really feel that sense of community during race weekend. Spectators bundle up, families come out to cheer, and everyone shares a common appreciation for the dogs and mushers taking part in the race. It’s one of those events that feels both exciting and grounded in history at the same time. Why I Love Photographing Sled Dogs This was my third time photographing sled dogs, and each time I’m reminded why I love documenting working and sport dogs so much. These dogs are athletes. They’re driven, enthusiastic, and incredibly bonded with their teams. Capturing that energy, along with the environment they thrive in, is something I always look forward to. It’s also very different from my typical portrait sessions, which makes it creatively refreshing. Final Thoughts This trip was such a great reminder of how much I enjoy winter photography, dog sports, and exploring different parts of Minnesota with my camera. Between the incredible dogs, the stunning scenery, and the sense of tradition surrounding the race, the Gunflint Mail Run was an unforgettable experience to photograph. Behind-the-Scenes Celebrating & Remembering Looking Ahead to 202 6 Seasonal Favorites 2025 was such a memorable year for my pet photography business! Every session holds a special place in my heart, and I genuinely remember each one individually. I love thinking about my work through the lens of the seasons, so here’s a look at the sessions that I feel best exemplify each season: Winter I didn't have many sessions in the winter months in 2025, but this one with Lucy and Michelle was top-notch. I couldn't have asked for a more picturesque winter backdrop than a gorgeous and ever-changing sunset sky over a frozen lake in January. I took a series of photos of Lucy running across the lake towards Michelle and stitched them together in Photoshop to create the panorama scene. One of my all-time favorite photo sessions, no question. Spring I had so many amazing sessions this spring, and it's tough to choose just one favorite, but this session with assistance dog, Petra, was among my favorites! As much as I love winter, I am always very happy to have the return of color after a long, cold, gray winter! Summer If I had to choose my favorite session from the summer, I would say it was this incredible morning at the Lyndale Park Rose Garden in Minneapolis with Maria and Jackson. I don't think I can put into words how perfect this session felt both in the moment and after when editing and delivering these images. It was just stunning and so special. I will forever cherish this sweet duo. Fall Fall is always my favorite time of year, and there were SO many beautiful sessions this fall! My favorite one was this little impromptu session with Buzz and Mandy on a tamarack boardwalk. Tamaracks are one of my favorite trees, so finding this little gem of a spot right when the tamaracks were in full golden glory was a sign from the universe that I needed to capture some cute photos here. I'm so thankful for these two for helping me bring this vision to life! Community Impact Rescue Partnerships In 2025, I was honored to work with thirteen local animal rescue organizations to photograph adoptable pets in need of loving homes. One of the highlights of the year, as always, was the annual Tonkadale event in March, where I teamed up with my photographer friends, Kelly and Kirsten, to capture adorable portraits of dogs and rabbits. Throughout the year, I photographed 28 adoptable animals, helping to enhance their adoption profiles and increase their chances of finding forever families. Non-Profit Collaborations I continued my ongoing partnership with Helping Paws, Inc. , a local non-profit dedicated to enhancing people’s independence and quality of life through assistance dogs. I’ve had the privilege of using my photography skills to document their daily operations and special moments. These images help tell the story of the incredible work they do, inspiring donors, volunteers, and the community to support their mission. Shooting My Dream North Shore Session In May, I traveled to Lutsen, MN, along the North Shore of Lake Superior, to capture a photo session for a longtime Instagram friend and her dog while they were in the area. This was very exciting for a number of reasons. I have been wanting to branch out to photograph people and their pets in more places in Minnesota. Cascade River State Park in Lutsen also holds sentimental value to me because it is where my husband and I got married in 2024. It is always such a joy to be back in the area and share it with more people! Tabling My First Event On a very sweltering July day, I tabled my very first vendor event! The kind folks at Pet Central Animal Hospital in Northeast Minneapolis, MN, invited me to join their 5th Annual Block Party event, celebrating their incredible clients and the community. Like I said, this was my first time participating in something like this, so I was entirely unprepared—especially given the extreme heat of the day—but I had a lot of fun meeting a lot of incredible people and their lovely pets who came out to join in the fun! Sending Personalized Thank You Notes 2025 marked the start of one of my favorite traditions thus far for my small business. I started sending personalized thank you notes to clients after sessions in the actual mail. I don't know about you, but I love receiving mail that isn't an advertisement or spam or a bill, so I thought it was important to add this little extra touch to my business. I really look forward to those days when I get to catch up on thank you notes from recent sessions and stop to remember those clients for a moment. Sometimes I had some cute Scruff Life Photography stickers in the envelopes... ☺️ Behind-the-Scenes When I wasn't capturing photos of your incredible pets, I was probably out exploring new trails, checking out a sweet pet-friendly cabin, or getting into a new hobby! 2025 took me to a few wonderful places, including the North Shore, Western Wisconsin, and Ely, MN. I was lucky enough to spend 12 days up on the North Shore across four different trips, including two cabin stays, one wall tent stay, and a good old-fashioned backpacking adventure (my very first!). I enjoyed two Wisconsin adventures with my family to get away from the hustle and bustle of 'real life' for a few days. Lastly, I had the incredible opportunity to partner with two awesome pet-friendly cabins in Ely, in September — Aurora Modern Cabin and Piney Woods Retreat. Out on the trails, I logged over 200 miles of hiking across Minnesota and western Wisconsin — more than I've ever done in a single year before. My friend, Brooke, and I set out with a goal to do our first backpacking trip together, and the Superior Hiking Trail just felt right, so part of my increase in miles was to prepare for that trip and the trip itself. We hiked 22 miles in two and a half days from Schroeder to Lutsen. I am already so excited to plan the next big adventure! In other news, I am proud to say that I read 53 books in 2025 after years of reading fewer than 10 books. A few of my favorites were The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, the Wayward Pines trilogy, also by Blake Crouch, The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Riverwood Hideaway – Two Harbors, MN Approx. 3 hours from Minneapolis, MN This off-grid, solar-powered hideaway is on the Knife River just a few miles outside of Two Harbors, MN. The cabin itself is loaded with comfort. A full kitchen, propane refrigerator, and a gas fireplace/furnace offer the conveniences of home. There is an outhouse and firewood available for the outdoor fire pit. You will have to bring your own water for drinking, but we provide hand and dish washing water at the sink. We have coffee with pour-over utensils, dishes, and spices. Pet Perks : Dogs are welcome at Riverwood Hideaway! With 12 acres to explore, your dog will love wandering the trails or lounging with you near the fire. The cabin provides food/water bowls and towels for your dog(s), just bring their favorite bed or crate to make them feel at home. Cabin Amenities : The hideaway is fully furnished and well-equipped for any stay. Highlights include riverfront access and seclusion close to Two Harbors, with every comfort of home in a small space. After a day of outdoor adventures, unwind in front of the fireplace. Nearby Attractions : Explore the nearby state parks (Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park), hiking and biking trails, or stop into Two Harbors for shopping and dining. Downtown Two Harbors is a short 10-minute drive away and includes many excellent options, such as Cedar Coffee Company and Castle Danger Brewery . Loon Lodge – Comstock, Wisconsin Approx. 1.5 hours from Minneapolis, MN Perched among the trees on the shores of Long Lake, Loon Lodge is a beautifully renovated cedar-lined cabin that combines Northwoods nostalgia with modern comfort. With multiple decks, cozy gathering spaces, and lake views from nearly every window, this cabin is made for relaxing, reconnecting, and soaking up the simple beauty of the lake. The long, winding driveway leads to a quiet lakefront escape surrounded by 13 acres of forest—where your only neighbors are across the lake or several lots away. Guests often spot deer, eagles, cranes, beavers, and sometimes even a black bear wandering through the property. Pet Perks:  Dogs are welcome to join the adventure! With acres of forest to explore, trails to sniff, and a lakeshore for cooling off, your pup will feel right at home in the wild. After a swim or paddle, unwind together by the firepit or on the lakeview deck. Where mornings start with mist over the lake and nights end beside a crackling fire, miles away from the everyday. What to Bring for Your Dog A little preparation can make your dog’s winter cabin stay cozy, safe, and stress-free.
