Back again for another year, the free foster photo event at Tonkadale Greenhouse in Minnetonka, MN was a huge success! Not only did we have some awesome treats to grab attention during the event, each of the adoptable pets went home with a goody bag from NutriSource and Finley's. The who's who of adoptable pets It was awesome to see some returning rescue organizations as well as some new ones! • How My Reactive Dog Helped Shape My Pet Photography Journey

As a pet photographer, you’d think my journey would be all happy, wagging tails and warm, wet noses ready for the camera. But my own dog, Conway, has shown me a different side of the pet world—one where animals can have big feelings, too. Conway, my 5-year-old Golden Retriever and Great Pyrenees mix, came into my life in 2019, and our journey together has forever changed the way I see dogs, their owners, and my role as a pet photographer. For some dogs, like Conway, new experiences and unfamiliar faces can be overwhelming. I refer to his reactivity as his "big feelings" because, while he’s deeply afraid of the unknown, he’s also the most loyal, affectionate dog you could meet if you’re part of his circle. With Conway, I've learned to better understand, adapt, and work compassionately with animals who might be a bit more guarded or nervous—lessons I now bring into every pet photography session I do. Learning to Read Canine Body Language Before Conway began to show signs of reactivity around his first birthday, I never thought about what reactivity truly meant for a dog or their owners. I was the dog lover who wanted to meet every furry friend I saw! But Conway’s journey taught me that not every dog is comfortable with strangers or in crowded, unpredictable settings. Through working with an incredible trainer to understand Conway’s needs, I learned how to read subtle canine body language cues—skills that are crucial in pet photography. I've become attuned to signs that might indicate discomfort, like a “smiling” tongue-out expression that could mean stress or a wagging tail that’s less a sign of happiness and more a signal of uncertainty. These details allow me to respect each animal’s comfort zone during sessions, and it's rewarding to see them relax when I listen to what they’re telling me. Choosing the Right Locations for Each Subject Living with Conway has also made me an expert at finding peaceful, hidden trails and less-frequented parks around Minnesota. Because he prefers spaces with minimal distractions, I’ve developed a list of perfect spots that allow him to enjoy his surroundings without the stress of encountering unfamiliar dogs. These secluded areas have become my go-to choices for photo sessions. I’ve seen firsthand how serene settings help reactive dogs stay calm and focused, resulting in beautiful, genuine portraits that capture their unique personalities. Fewer distractions mean pets engage more directly with me, and I get to capture their true essence in an environment that feels safe. Patience as a Pet Photographer Patience is a must for any pet photographer, but with Conway, I’ve developed an entirely new level of it. When I meet a new animal, I take a calm approach, standing back and allowing the dog to approach me at their own pace. I’ve learned not to rush this step—it’s about building trust and letting them feel comfortable with my presence before we dive into the session. Rather than diving in with excitement, I take a quieter approach, starting with calm interactions and letting each animal set the pace. Once a dog is ready, we’re off, capturing those spontaneous, candid shots that are possible only when a dog feels safe. Understanding the Challenges of Reactive Pet Owners Being Conway’s owner has made me deeply empathetic toward pet parents with reactive, anxious, or shy dogs. I know how difficult it is to work through reactivity, a journey full of time and effort with no promise of a “quick fix.” I also know the discomfort of feeling judged as I work to redirect a barking, lunging 90-pound dog on the edge of a trail. But I also know the relief when someone gives us extra space, acknowledges the struggle, and lets us pass without comment. When I work with clients who have reactive pets, I’m mindful of the challenges they face, from choosing quiet locations to planning every interaction to ensure their pet feels secure. My goal is to provide a compassionate and understanding environment so that both the pet and their owner feel respected and supported throughout the session. Unique Techniques to Capture 'Big Feelings' Conway has taught me several techniques to capture these “big feelings” without overwhelming the pet. I’ve learned to keep my distance with longer lenses, allowing shy or reactive animals to feel unpressured by my presence while still capturing every sweet detail. By creating a calm, non-pressuring atmosphere, I’m able to bring out each dog’s true personality. I treat each animal as an individual with unique needs and reactions. With Conway’s help, I’ve learned to adjust my techniques on the spot, and it’s a skill I value as I approach each new session. Conclusion I hope you enjoyed learning more about how my reactive dog helped shape my pet photography journey. I wouldn’t be the photographer I am today without Conway’s influence. He’s taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of adapting my approach to meet each dog where they are. For those with reactive or sensitive pets, know that beautiful, authentic photos are possible. With Conway’s guidance, I’ve learned how to approach each animal with respect, and I’m here to help capture the love and bond you share with your pets, big feelings and all. Reach out today if you'd like to discuss the possibility of a photo session with your pet, big feelings and all. Here's a glimpse of Conway's life (so far) in order (sort of, not really) from most recent to long ago... through my eyes as not only a pet photographer, but his dog mom, best friend, and the person responsible for his mental health. • Capturing the Journey of Assistance Dogs in Training: A Year of Volunteering with Helping Paws

When I first began volunteering my photography services with Helping Paws, Inc. , I knew I was stepping into something special. Helping Paws is dedicated to enhancing the independence and quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities and veterans with PTSD through the assistance of service dogs. From tiny puppies taking their first steps into training to the emotional moments of graduation, each session has deepened my appreciation for this organization's work. Capturing the Journey of Assistance Dogs in Training Throughout the year, I covered a variety of events that showcased the growth, dedication, and impact of these incredible service dogs and their handlers. Here are some of the highlights: Meet the Puppies: The Beginning of a Journey One of the most joyful aspects of volunteering with Helping Paws has been photographing the puppies at the very start of their training. This year, I captured the Valentine Litter (March 2024), the Wonder Litter (July 2024), and the Adventure Litter (January 2025).  Each litter had its own unique personality, and watching them explore the world, learn basic skills, and interact with their trainers was a delight. These tiny future service dogs were full of energy, curiosity, and promise. How are the puppies named? Helping Paws names their litters of puppies in alphabetical order from A to Z (though they might skip a few letters along the way). Each puppy's name starts with the same letter as the name of their litter, but there’s a catch—they can’t reuse a name that belongs to a living Helping Paws dog. This rule leads to some wonderfully creative and unique names! Puppy Send-Offs: A Bittersweet Transition One of the most emotional moments in a puppy’s journey is the send-off to their foster home trainers , where they begin their intensive training. I documented the Thankful Litter Send-Off (January 2024) and the Valentine Litter Send-Off (April 2024) this year .  These events were full of mixed emotions—excitement for the next step, but also heartfelt goodbyes as the puppies left their first caregivers. The dedication of Helping Paws’ foster families was evident in every hug, every tear, and every hopeful glance toward the future. What's a foster home trainer? Helping Paws' foster home trainers are volunteers who dedicate about two years to raising and training a future service dog! They teach essential skills, expose the puppies to real-world experiences, and provide lots of love and guidance. Many foster trainers have raised multiple Helping Paws dogs over the years, making a lasting impact on the lives of both the dogs and their future partners. Training Classes: Hard Work and Dedication In May, I had the chance to photograph Helping Paws training classes (May 2024) , where puppies in various stages of their journey worked with their trainers. Seeing these dogs develop advanced skills—such as opening doors, retrieving items, and providing emotional support—was incredible. Capturing these moments highlighted the immense time, patience, and effort that goes into training each dog to become a reliable service companion. How long does it take to become an assistance dog? Helping Paws service dogs train for 2 to 2.5 years and learn over 70 cues to assist their future partners. By the time they graduate, they can pick up something as small as a dime, retrieve a phone, open doors and drawers, and even search for help in an emergency—all while staying focused in busy environments like restaurants and community events! Graduation: A Life-Changing Milestone One of the most powerful events I photographed was the Helping Paws Graduation (March 2024).  This is the moment when service dogs officially transition to their new roles alongside their human partners. Witnessing the deep bond between handlers and their dogs was nothing short of inspiring. The joy, pride, and gratitude in the room were palpable, and each photograph told a story of dedication, resilience, and the life-changing impact of these partnerships. What happens after teams are matched? Helping Paws service dog teams don’t just graduate and go their separate ways—training and support continue for the lifetime of the dog! The journey to graduation includes a careful matching process, intensive team training, and ongoing follow-ups to ensure each partnership thrives. Some graduates say they didn’t fully understand what a “match” meant until they found the one —a dog that felt like a true teammate from day one! Paws in Motion 5K: Community in Action The Paws in Motion 5K (May 2024)  was a lively and heartwarming event that brought together Helping Paws supporters, volunteers, and service dogs in training. It was incredible to see the community rally around such an important cause. My photos from the event captured the enthusiasm of participants, the wagging tails of eager dogs, and the overwhelming support for Helping Paws’ mission. Events like this are crucial for fundraising and spreading awareness, and I was honored to be part of it. The Impact of Photography Photography plays a crucial role in telling the story of organizations like Helping Paws. Through my images, I aim to capture the dedication of trainers, the joy of new partnerships, and the transformation of service dogs from playful puppies to life-changing companions.  These photographs not only serve as cherished memories but also help increase awareness, encourage donations, and showcase the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes in the journey of assistance dogs in training. Volunteering with Helping Paws has given me a deeper appreciation for the impact of service dogs and the community that supports them . I’ve learned about the immense effort that goes into training these dogs, the patience required to guide them through their journey, and the incredible difference they make in people’s lives. This experience has strengthened my connection to pet photography, reminding me how powerful images can be in celebrating the human-animal bond . Looking Ahead As I continue my work with Helping Paws, I look forward to capturing even more milestones, from new litters of puppies to the next class of graduating service dogs. • Leash or No Leash for Pet Photography?

One of the most common concerns I hear from pet parents before a photo session is about leashes. Many worry that their dog won’t sit still, doesn’t have a reliable stay, or won’t listen well enough to be off-leash. Others fear that having a leash in the photos will make them look unnatural or distracting. If you’ve had the same concern, I’m here to reassure you— most of my sessions involve dogs on leash , and I promise, your final images will be just as stunning! Why Are Most Dogs on Leash During Sessions? There are a few key reasons why leashes are a normal part of my pet photography sessions: Safety First  – Keeping dogs on leash ensures they stay safe, especially in outdoor locations with distractions like wildlife, other dogs, or busy roads. Location Rules  – Most of the beautiful locations I use for photo sessions require dogs to be on a leash. Parks, trails, and nature areas often have strict leash policies to protect both wildlife and visitors. Peace of Mind  – Not every dog has a reliable recall, and that’s completely okay! A leash allows your dog to move naturally while still giving you peace of mind that they won’t wander off or get into trouble. The Magic of Leash Removal in Editing You might be wondering, “But won’t the leash ruin the photos?” The good news is that I can edit leashes out in post-processing if we position the leash just right! Below are some before-and-after images so you can see just how seamless the final results look. The leash gives us control during the session, but it disappears in the final images, leaving only beautiful, natural portraits of your pup. Off-Leash Locations for a Fun Twist While most sessions involve a leash, there are options for capturing your dog off-leash safely and legally! If you’re interested in letting your dog run free for part of the session, consider: Scenic Dog Parks  – Some local dog parks feature stunning natural backdrops, perfect for capturing action shots and candid moments of your pup in motion. SniffSpots  – These private, rentable spaces provide a secure environment where your dog can explore and play off-leash without distractions. Your Backyard  – While this isn't always an option, this can be a familiar and comfortable space for your dog, making it a great option for relaxed, off-leash portraits. Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs)  – For dogs with a solid recall, WMAs offer vast natural landscapes to explore off-leash, as long as seasonal regulations set by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are followed. If your dog is reliable off-leash and you’d love to incorporate some of these locations into your session, we can absolutely plan for it! Callie splashes off-leash in a creek at a local private photo location. Your Dog’s Personality Shines—Leash or No Leash Whether your dog is on leash or off, the most important part of a session is capturing their unique personality and the bond you share. Their joy, curiosity, and love will shine through in every image, and with a little editing magic, you’ll never even know a leash was there! Have questions or want to book a session? Let’s chat and plan the perfect adventure for you and your pup!

  • It's Too Cold! 10 Indoor Pet Activities for Minnesota Winters

When temperatures in Minnesota drop below zero and windchills dip into the double-digit negatives, outdoor adventures with your pets take a backseat. But just because it's freezing outside doesn’t mean your pets need to miss out on fun, enrichment, and exercise. Here are some creative and practical ways to keep your pets happy, engaged, and entertained indoors this winter. Indoor Pet Activities for Minnesota Winters 1. DIY Enrichment Activities Keeping your pet’s brain engaged is just as important as physical exercise. Enrichment activities are a great way to challenge their minds and provide stimulation without heading outdoors. Puzzle Feeders : You don’t need to buy fancy puzzle toys — create your own! Use a muffin tin and tennis balls to hide treats under. Your pet will have fun figuring out how to move the balls to get the goodies. Snuffle Mats : If you don’t have a snuffle mat, scatter kibble or treats across a small area of carpet or a towel and let your pet “sniff out” their meal. This taps into their natural foraging instincts. Treasure Hunts : Hide treats or toys around the house and encourage your pet to seek them out. Use verbal cues like "find it" to make it a game. 2. Training Sessions Cold days are perfect for brushing up on old tricks or teaching new ones. Training sessions don’t have to be long — 10 minutes a couple of times a day is plenty! Basic Obedience : Practice commands like sit, stay, down, and come. If they’ve mastered the basics, work on advanced commands like "leave it" or "go to your place." Fun Tricks : Teach playful commands like “spin,” “high five,” or even “tidy up” (putting toys in a basket). Use plenty of positive reinforcement to make learning fun. Nose Work Games : Start with a simple game like hiding a treat under one of three cups and letting your pet find it. You can progress to more challenging scent-detection games over time. 3. Interactive Toys and Games Interactive toys are lifesavers on cold winter days. They keep your pet entertained and give you a break if you’re juggling a busy schedule. Tug-of-War : A classic game that’s great for burning energy. Just be mindful of your pet’s size and strength to avoid accidental injuries. Indoor Fetch : Use a soft toy or a lightweight ball to play fetch in a hallway or large room. Move furniture out of the way to create a safe play zone. Flirt Pole : A flirt pole is like a giant cat toy for dogs, featuring a long pole with a rope and a toy attached. Swing it around for your dog to chase and pounce on, providing a great workout in a small space. 4. DIY Indoor Obstacle Course Transform your living room into an agility playground! Use everyday items to create an obstacle course that challenges your pet both mentally and physically. Jumping : Use broomsticks balanced on low objects to create jumps. Adjust the height based on your pet’s ability. Weaving : Set up a line of chairs or cones for your dog to weave through. Encourage them with treats and verbal praise. Tunnels : A collapsible play tunnel or even a blanket draped over chairs can serve as a fun tunnel for your pet to crawl through. 5. Pamper Your Pet Turn a chilly day into a spa day! Pampering your pet is a great way to bond and keep them calm and relaxed. Grooming Session : Brush their coat, trim their nails, or give them a bath if needed. Use gentle, pet-safe products and reward them with treats for good behavior. Pet Massage : Help your pet unwind with a relaxing massage. Focus on their shoulders, neck, and back, using light pressure to mimic stroking. 6. Food-Based Activities Who says you can’t treat your pets to a fun culinary experience indoors? Homemade Treats : Bake your own dog-friendly biscuits or cat treats. Recipes with pumpkin, peanut butter (without xylitol), or oats are easy and nutritious. Frozen Kongs, Toppls, or Lick Mats : Fill a Kong, Toppl, or a lick mat with peanut butter, yogurt, or a mix of wet and dry food. Freeze it for a long-lasting activity. 7. Watch Pet TV or Listen to Calming Music Create a soothing ambiance for your pet by playing pet-friendly entertainment. Pet TV : Many streaming services offer content designed specifically for pets. From birds chirping to fish swimming, these shows can keep your pet’s attention for hours. Calming Music : Classical music or nature sounds can help pets relax and feel less stressed, especially if they’re cooped up inside for an extended period. 8. Capture Cozy Moments with an Indoor Photo Session Make the most of natural light streaming through your windows and create a mini photo shoot. Use props like blankets, toys, or fairy lights for a cozy winter vibe. Share your adorable photos on social media — they’ll warm everyone’s hearts on a cold day. 9. Create a Cozy Space Set up a warm, inviting spot for your pet to relax during the frigid weather. Warm Bedding : Use their favorite blanket or bed, and consider adding a pet-safe heating pad for extra warmth. Hideaway Spots : Cats, in particular, love cozy hideaways. Set up a cardboard box or a covered cat tree for them to snuggle in. 10. Stay Active Indoors Even high-energy pets can burn off steam indoors with the right activities. Stair Play : If you have stairs, use them for a game of fetch or chase. This is great for dogs with energy to spare. Hide-and-Seek : Hide in a different room and call your pet to come find you. Reward them with praise and treats when they do. Wrap-Up: Keeping Pets Happy in the Cold When the Minnesota winter is too cold for outdoor play, these indoor activities can keep your pets entertained, exercised, and mentally stimulated. Whether it’s a cozy grooming session, a DIY obstacle course, or a tasty treat-making session, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of your time indoors. Which of these activities will you try with your pet first? Share your experiences or ideas in the comments — I'd love to hear them! • A Year of Tails and Trails: Scruff Life Photography’s 2024 Recap

Reflecting on 2024, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible moments this year has brought. From capturing joyful, fleeting moments between pets and their people to exploring new creative opportunities, this year has been one of growth, connection, and adventure. Every session, every hike, and every behind-the-scenes project has reminded me why I love what I do. Scruff Life Photography wouldn’t be what it is without the amazing clients, our floofy friends, and a supportive community who trust me to tell their stories. This 2024 recap is my chance to reflect on the highlights, celebrate the milestones, and share the adventures that made this year unforgettable. Thank you for being part of this journey with me, and I can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store! Seasonal Favorites Community Impact Client Gratitude Achievements & Growth Behind-the-Scenes Celebrating & Remembering All the Dogs Looking Ahead to 2025 Seasonal Favorites 2024 was such a memorable year for my pet photography business! Every session holds a special place in my heart, and I genuinely remember each one individually. I love thinking about my work through the lens of the seasons, so here’s a look at the sessions that I feel best exemplify each season: Winter Though last year’s winter wasn’t as snowy or cold as we’d hoped, I was lucky enough to capture some truly magical moments. One standout was Michelle and Lucy’s iconic blizzard session in the red pine stand. The swirling snow and serene backdrop created one of my all-time favorite winter sessions. Spring Spring came to life with the breathtaking cherry blossoms at Como Park in St. Paul. Cassandra and Kona’s session under the vibrant blooms was pure magic — I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect spring setting. You can read about this dreamy session: Kona's Cherry Blossom Photo Session . Summer Summer was filled with fresh energy and unforgettable moments, but one of my favorite sessions was with Dougie and Russell by the lake during golden hour. This session felt extra special because it took place in their private yard, giving me the freedom to capture their playful spirits without leashes. The sunset that evening was absolutely spectacular! See more of this magical session here: Dougie & Russell's Minnesota Summer Lakeside Photo Session . Fall Fall always brings such vibrant colors, and I eagerly anticipate capturing your pups against the stunning autumn backdrop each year. This fall, one of my favorite sessions was with Willow at a beautiful new-to-me location featuring an incredible boardwalk. Walking the boardwalk with Willow and her humans, pausing to take photos, and letting Willow explore her surroundings, made for an unforgettable autumn experience. Community Impact Rescue Partnerships In 2024, I was honored to work with nine local animal rescue organizations to photograph adoptable pets in need of loving homes. One of the highlights of the year was the annual Tonkadale event in March, where I teamed up with my photographer friends, Kelly and Kirsten, to capture adorable portraits of dogs and rabbits. Throughout the year, I photographed over 20 adoptable animals, helping to enhance their adoption profiles and increase their chances of finding forever families. Non-Profit Collaborations This year also marked the beginning of my volunteer work with Helping Paws, Inc. , a local non-profit dedicated to enhancing people’s independence and quality of life through assistance dogs. Since January, I’ve had the privilege of using my photography skills to document their daily operations and special moments. These images help tell the story of the incredible work they do, inspiring donors, volunteers, and the community to support their mission. Client Gratitude I’m endlessly grateful for the incredible clients I had the privilege of working with this year. From new faces to familiar ones, each session has been a joy, and I cherish the opportunity to connect with every pet and their amazing people. Thank you all for trusting me to capture these meaningful moments — from welcoming a new family member to honoring those precious final moments together. This work holds deep meaning for me, and I take immense pride in preserving these memories for you. Here are a few kind words from my wonderful clients this year: "Lauren is fantastic to work with and it's been so much fun to get great photos of us with our pups! I have a reactive dog that not many people know how to deal with and I never thought we'd be getting professional photos but Lauren does absolutely amazing with her and has gotten some beautiful photos. She has great ideas on locations and shots but is also flexible and makes sure each session is individualized to what we're looking for. Highly recommend her for any type of photoshoot including your pets!" - Julia "I cannot express how respectful and pleasant SLP is. Not only is she able to capture our dogs so well, the process is so easy. Highly recommend working with her." - Jonathan, Helping Paws, Inc. "Lauren captured my senior dogs, Libby & Maggie, perfectly! I did include my young dog, Brooke, in a few shots too. I can't wait to get the portraits back from the photo lab & display them." - Veronica If we’ve had the chance to work together and you’d like to share your experience, I’d be so grateful for a review on Google! You can leave one here . Achievements & Growth Refreshed Branding & Website 2024 was a transformative year for Scruff Life Photography! The year kicked off with a fresh new look, thanks to a revamped website and updated branding. I was thrilled to work with my dream graphic designer, Cindy Roaming Designs , who brought my vision to life at the end of 2023. I took that beautiful branding and incorporated it into my new website design — a project I’m proud to have done myself! New Blog This year also marked the launch of my blog, which has been such a rewarding addition to the business. I’ve loved creating curated lists of activities and events for pet parents, and providing helpful resources while celebrating our furry companions. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! I have plenty of exciting ideas for blog posts in 2025, and I can’t wait to share them with you. Stay tuned! These are the most-viewed blog posts of 2024: The Dog Days Are Back: The Ultimate Guide to Twin Cities Pet Events This Summer (2024) Unleash the Fun: The Ultimate Guide to Twin Cities Pet Events This Spring (2024) 10 Fall Activities to Enjoy with Your Dog in the Twin Cities Fall is for the Dogs: The Ultimate Guide to Twin Cities Pet Events This Fall (2024) Warm Hearts, Cold Noses: The Ultimate Guide to Twin Cities Pet Events This Winter (2024-25) White Bear Lake Magazine Feature One of the highlights of 2024 was being featured in the May/June edition of White Bear Lake Magazine — a huge honor for Scruff Life Photography! I’ll admit, putting myself out there doesn’t come naturally, so when they first reached out, I was hesitant and unsure of what to say about this little pet photography business of mine. However, the entire process turned out to be such a positive experience, and I’m absolutely thrilled with how the feature came together. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, you can read the article here: Scruff Life Photography Specializes in Pet Portraits Behind-the-Scenes When I wasn’t behind the camera capturing your incredible pets, I was off on my own adventures —exploring new trails with my dogs, enjoying cozy dog-friendly cabins in the woods, or planning one of the most exciting events of my life... my wedding! This September, we tied the knot in beautiful Lutsen, MN, near Cascade River State Park. And yes, the dogs joined us! Having them there was a dream come true, especially given Conway’s “stranger danger” and the general chaos of a wedding day. This year, I also had the pleasure of partnering with three rental cabins to create dog-centric content for their websites, social media, and listings. Finding truly dog-friendly accommodations can be a challenge, so it’s been incredibly rewarding to help showcase these spots. I even shared some of my favorites in this blog post: Cozy, Dog-Friendly Cabins for Your Next Winter Getaway . Out on the trails, I logged nearly 150 miles of hiking across Minnesota and western Wisconsin — sometimes with the dogs and sometimes solo. Along the way, I discovered some fantastic new trails, many of which I’ve added to the location guide for my photography clients to help them choose the perfect session spot. It’s been a year full of exploration, and I’m grateful to call the beautiful St. Croix River Valley my home. Celebrating & Remembering All the Dogs As I look back on 2024, I’m so grateful for all the incredible dogs I had the privilege to photograph this year. From traditional portrait sessions to a few unique milestones, this year brought such wonderful variety. I captured two graduation sessions, one newborn session, and a maternity session — all featuring beloved dogs, of course. This year also brought a record number of sessions with multiple dogs, which was both a fun challenge and an opportunity to grow my skills. Coordinating multiple pups for the perfect shot isn’t always easy, but the results were so worth it. I also want to take a moment to honor the beloved dogs who crossed the rainbow bridge in 2024. Capturing the bond between pets and their people is such a meaningful part of my work, and I am always deeply touched when I have the opportunity to create lasting memories for families during their final moments together. To all the pet parents who said goodbye this year: thank you for trusting me with these tender and emotional sessions. Your pets will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I hope the photos we created together bring you comfort and joy as you remember the incredible love you shared. Here’s to the dogs who left paw prints on all of our hearts this year — they are dearly missed and forever cherished. 🌈 Looking Ahead to 2025 Capturing More Winter Dog Sports After a year off from photographing sled dog races due to last winter’s unusual weather, I’m eager to get back to it in 2025! I’m hopeful for a more traditional winter season and have already planned to photograph some of my favorite events, including the Gunflint Mail Run in Grand Marais, MN, the Klondike Dog Derby in Excelsior, MN, and the WolfTrack Classic in Ely, MN. I can’t wait to capture the energy, teamwork, and beauty of these incredible races once again! Dog-Friendly Cabin Partnerships In 2024, I partnered with three cabin owners to highlight their pet-friendly accommodations, a genre of photography I’ve truly fallen in love with since 2023. Exploring cozy cabins with my dogs, capturing their unique charm, and sharing those details with you has been so rewarding. These projects not only showcase great places to stay but also help pet parents find the perfect getaway ideas! In 2025, I hope to expand these partnerships, working with more cabin owners across Minnesota and the Midwest. If you’re a cabin owner interested in these services, I’d love to hear from you ! Exploring New Photo Locations One of my favorite parts of this job is discovering beautiful new locations for sessions with you and your pets. This past year, I added several new spots to my location guide and even rediscovered some old favorites that are now at the top of my list. As weather patterns continue to shift, scouting each location before a session is becoming more important than ever. In 2025, I’m committed to pre-scouting every spot to ensure it’s ready to provide the perfect backdrop for your photos. I can’t wait to see what new gems we’ll find together this year! About Scruff Life Photography: Hi, I'm Lauren, the pet-loving photographer behind Scruff Life Photography! Based in Minnesota, I specialize in capturing the unique bond between people and their beloved pets. Whether you’ve just welcomed a new furry friend into your life or are cherishing the years spent with a lifelong companion, I’m here to help you preserve those special moments. Pets are family, and their stories deserve to be celebrated with timeless, professional photos you’ll treasure forever. Let’s create something meaningful together — reach out today to schedule your pet photo session !

  • Dog-Friendly Parks in Minnesota: Como Regional Park

Nestled in the heart of St. Paul, MN, Como Regional Park is a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts and dog lovers alike. This versatile park offers a blend of urban charm and natural beauty, making it a favorite for those seeking dog-friendly adventures close to the city. Whether you're exploring the trails, taking in scenic views, or enjoying a post-hike treat, Como Regional Park has something for everyone. What you'll find within this blog: About Como Regional Park Highlighted Trails Post-Hike Food, Drinks, & More Final Tips About Scruff Life Photography Cherry Blossoms in the Spring at Como Regional Park About Como Regional Park Como Regional Park is a vibrant urban retreat spanning over 450 acres, offering something for everyone. Known for its scenic Como Lake, lush gardens, and beloved family-friendly attractions like the Como Zoo and Conservatory, this park is also a gem for dog lovers. With its open spaces, tranquil trails, and shaded areas, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or an energetic hike with your furry companion. The park’s roots run deep, with a rich history that adds to its charm. Originally a swampy area surrounded by oak savannas, the land was seasonally inhabited by the Dakota people, who named the lake Medawaka, meaning "Lake Mysterious." In the mid-19th century, one of the first European settlers, Charles Perry, claimed 160 acres of farmland here and renamed the lake after Italy’s Lake Como near his birthplace in the Swiss-Italian Alps. Over time, the area evolved into the cherished community park it is today. Adding to the park’s beauty is its connection to global culture. In 2012, to mark the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift of cherry trees to Washington, DC, the Japanese government donated 20 cherry trees to St. Paul. This gift celebrated the city’s nearly 60-year sister-city relationship with Nagasaki. These trees were planted near the Mannheimer Memorial and serve as a bridge connecting several serene spaces, including the Global Harmony Labyrinth, the restored lily pond, and the Charlotte Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden. The dedication ceremony for the trees was a memorable event, featuring performances like sakura dances by Sansei Yonsei Kai, shakuhachi flute music by Leo Hansen, and western flute pieces by Ryusuke Jono. Honored guests included Deputy Consul Ichiro Sawada, Representative Betty McCollum, and local leaders like Mayor Chris Coleman. Today, these cherry trees not only enhance the park’s natural beauty but also symbolize the enduring friendship between St. Paul and Nagasaki. • What is Golden Hour & Why Do Photographers Love It So Much?

It's no secret that I and so many photographers love shooting during golden hour. What the heck is golden hour and why do photographers love it so much? These questions and more will be answered in this blog post, so hopefully you can understand why your photographer wants to schedule a session with you so late (or so early)! Golden hour is a period (usually an hour long depending on the season and your latitude) shortly after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low in the sky, producing a unique quality of light that is highly prized in photography. I love photographing during golden hour for the following reasons: Soft, Warm Light : The light during golden hour is softer and warmer compared to the harsh mid-day sun. This gentle light enhances your pet's features and fur, giving them a flattering, natural look. Reduced Shadows : The lower angle of the sun minimizes strong shadows and harsh contrasts. This is particularly beneficial for capturing the finer details of your pet's face and fur. Enhanced Colors : The warm tones of golden hour light enrich the colors captured by my camera, making your pet's coat and the surrounding environment appear more vibrant and appealing. Catchlights in Eyes : The angle and quality of golden hour light often create beautiful catchlights in your pet’s eyes, adding life and sparkle to the portrait. Pleasant Environment : Golden hour typically occurs during the early morning or late evening, times when the environment is more pleasant and cooler. Pets are often more comfortable and relaxed, leading to better, more natural expressions and poses. Atmospheric Effects : The potential for dramatic skies and a golden glow adds an extra layer of beauty and interest to the background, enhancing the overall mood of the gallery. Fewer Distractions : There are usually fewer people and other pets out during golden hour, which leads to a session with fewer distractions. This can make or break a session with a reactive or easily distracted pet! If you reach out to book a session with me around June, there's a pretty good chance I give you a timeframe around 8 pm to start the session. I know that sounds late. It feels crazy to me to start an activity that late, too! I love going to bed early and getting a full night's rest, but you can't replicate the effects of golden hour at any other time... unless, of course, you'd rather start your session at 5 am... In which case, I'll need a boatload of coffee, but I'm down! A follow-up question you might have to all of this information: "How can I determine when golden hour will be three months from now (or whenever) on my trip or at my house or the local park?" Great question! I use an app called Alpenglow on my phone which allows me to type in a location and select a date in the future and it tells me, down to the minute, when golden hour (morning and evening) will be. It also shares when it will be first light, daylight, last light, blue hour, etc. Everything you could ever want to know about timing a session. I use this app for 100% of photo sessions booked, whether it ends up being during golden hour or not. (Sometimes sessions can only happen in the middle of the day, and I understand that). The app predicts the 'quality' of the sunrise and sunset, too, but I'm not sure I know what they consider to be a "good" sunrise/sunset, so I don't worry too much about it. I prefer to look at the predicted cloud cover around the session time to gauge how much sun we will have for the session. Since a photography blog is incomplete without photos, here are some examples from a recent golden hour photo session with Lucy to show you the soft, warm, glowy, flattering light that can be achieved when shooting at golden hour. I hope this information has been enlightening, whether you're just curious about photography or wondering why I want to book a session at such a late/early hour! Please leave a comment if you have any questions about golden hour photography. I'd love to help if I can!
