- 11 Activities to Enjoy with Your Dog this Summer
Summer in Minnesota means long sunny days, vibrant green spaces, and endless opportunities for outdoor fun with your four-legged best friend. Whether you're looking to cool off by the lake, explore scenic trails, or enjoy a pup-friendly patio brunch, there's no shortage of dog-friendly adventures to enjoy. Here are 11 activities to enjoy with your dog this summer in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and beyond! 1. Splash Around at a Dog-Friendly Beach Beat the summer heat with a trip to one of the area’s pup-approved swimming spots! Dogs who love the water will have a blast paddling, fetching, and rolling in the sand. Try: Alimagnet Dog Park – Burnsville, MN Minnehaha Off-Leash Recreation Area — Minneapolis, MN Meeker Island Dog Park — St. Paul, MN Battle Creek Dog Park — Maplewood, MN Matoska Park — White Bear Lake, MN Pro Tip: Check online to make sure you don't need to pre-register your dog to use the beach. Don’t forget towels, a floaty toy, and drinking water for your pup! 2. Try Paddle Boarding with Your Pup Paddle boarding is a unique and peaceful way to enjoy Minnesota’s lakes, and yes, your dog can join in the fun too! Many local rental shops allow dogs, or bring your own board for a sunrise paddle. Pro Tip: Use a doggy life jacket and start with short trips near shore to help your pup build confidence. 3. Grab an Iced Coffee at a Dog-Friendly Patio Sip an iced latte while your dog people-watches at your feet... what could be better? From coffee shops to breweries, Twin Cities patios welcome pups all summer long. Pro Tip: Arrive early in the day to avoid the heat and secure a shady spot. 4. Go for a Hike at a State Park You don’t have to drive hours north to find adventure. There are several beautiful state parks right in the Twin Cities metro! These parks offer shady trails, scenic overlooks, and plenty of space for your dog to sniff, explore, and stretch their legs. Try : Fort Snelling State Park – Flat, wooded trails with river views and lots of wildlife. Afton State Park – Blufftop views of the St. Croix and challenging trails for energetic pups. William O’Brien State Park – Peaceful wooded paths and prairie trails just outside of Stillwater. Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area – Great for quiet hikes through floodplain forest and fields. Pro Tip : Minnesota state parks require a vehicle permit, but many also offer free entry on designated Free Park Days, perfect for a spontaneous summer hike! 5. Attend a Dog-Friendly Summer Festival From art fairs to brewery events, many Twin Cities summer happenings roll out the red carpet for dogs. Watch for pet-themed events or general festivals that allow leashed dogs. Pro Tip: Check out Chasing Golden Moments: The Ultimate Guide to Twin Cities Pet Events This Summer (2025) for a list of pet-related and pet-friendly events happening this summer all around the Twin Cities metro area! 6. Have a Picnic in the Park Pack up a lunch, grab your favorite blanket, and find a shady spot at one of the city’s many green spaces. A relaxed picnic is a great way to spend quality time with your pup. Pro Tip: Freeze a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter for a long-lasting treat during downtime. 7. Visit a Dog-Friendly Sunflower Field Nothing says summer quite like a sunflower field in full bloom, and yes, your pup is welcome at some of them! These bright, cheerful backdrops make for an unforgettable outing and the most joyful seasonal photos. My favorite is Green Barn Garden Center in Isanti, MN . Their sunflower field is dog-friendly (on leash), and I’ll be offering a limited number of sunflower photo sessions there again this year! Pro Tip : Sunflowers usually bloom in late July through August. Follow your favorite local farm on social media for bloom updates and be sure to bring water and poop bags for your pup! 8. Plan a Fireworks-Free 4th of July Getaway Fireworks can be stressful for pets, so why not escape the noise altogether? Book a cabin up north or camp in a quieter area to enjoy the holiday in peace. Pro Tip: Try to venture somewhere off the beaten path for a bit more quiet and seclusion! 9. Take a Weekend Trip to a Dog-Friendly Cabin Summer is the ideal time to escape the hustle and relax at a pet-friendly retreat. Choose a cabin near a lake or trail system for the ultimate adventure-meets-rest getaway. Pro Tip: Look for cabins with fenced yards or screened porches for extra peace of mind. 10. Go on a Scenic Summer Road Trip Explore small towns, riverside vistas, and state parks along one of Minnesota’s many scenic byways. Don’t forget to include a few dog-friendly stops along the way! Pro Tip: Use Sniffspot or BringFido to find pet-friendly stops along the way. 11. Treat Your Dog to a Pup Cup No summer adventure is complete without ice cream! Many local ice cream shops and cafés offer “pup cups” so your dog can join in on the sweet summer fun. Pro Tip: Ask what’s in the pup cup. Some use whipped cream while others offer frozen yogurt or dog-safe peanut butter treats. - Celebrating a Life Well Loved: The Importance of End-of-Life Pet Photography
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest experiences we face as pet parents. Our pets are more than just animals; they are family, constant companions, and sources of unconditional love. As they near the end of their journey, many pet parents find comfort in preserving their pet's memory through photography. That's why I offer Celebration Sessions —a heartfelt way to honor your pet’s life and the love you share. What Are Celebration Sessions? Celebration Sessions (also known as Celebration of Life Sessions, Legacy Sessions, Forget Me Not Sessions, Tribute Sessions, Sunset Sessions, Rainbow Bridge Sessions, End-of-Life Pet Photography, and more) are designed for pets in their senior years, those facing terminal illness, or those whose time is growing short. These sessions are not about capturing sadness; rather, they celebrate the joy, love, and unique spirit of your pet. Each session is tailored to your pet’s needs, whether that means taking things slow, choosing a familiar and comfortable location, or simply sitting together and soaking in the love. My goal is to create a relaxed, meaningful experience that results in images you’ll cherish forever. “And it is exceedingly short, his galloping life. Dogs die so soon. I have my stories of that grief, no doubt many of you do also. It is almost a failure of will, a failure of love, to let them grow old—or so it feels. We would do anything to keep them with us, and to keep them young. The one gift we cannot give.” ― Mary Oliver, Dog Songs: Poems Why End-of-Life Pet Photography Matters The emotions surrounding the final stages of a pet’s life are complex, but many pet parents find solace in having tangible memories to hold onto. A Celebration Session: Preserves Special Moments – A beautiful way to capture the essence of your pet, from their gentle eyes to the way they lean into your touch. Helps with the Grieving Process – Having images to look back on can provide comfort and healing after your pet has passed. Celebrates Your Bond – These sessions focus on love and connection, showcasing the special relationship you share. What to Expect from a Celebration Session I approach every Celebration Session with empathy, patience, and care. Here’s what you can expect: A calm, stress-free experience designed to accommodate your pet’s comfort level. Location options based on what’s best for your pet, whether that’s at home, a favorite park, or a quiet outdoor setting. A mix of candid and gently posed photos, ensuring we capture their personality and the love you share. Gentle guidance for you and your pet, helping you feel at ease in front of the camera. Frequently Asked Questions When is the right time to schedule a session? Every situation is unique, but if your pet is experiencing declining health, now is the right time to consider it. Many pet parents say they wish they had booked sooner. What if my pet is sick or in pain? I take great care in ensuring the session is peaceful and comfortable. We move at your pet’s pace and adapt as needed to ensure they are never stressed or uncomfortable. How do I prepare for the session? You don’t need to do anything special—just bring your pet’s favorite blanket, toy, or treats. If you'd like any of their momentos captured, such as a collar and tag or favorite toy, please bring those along. I’ll take care of the rest. Can I include my other pets in a session? Yes, of course! My Celebration Session price is for one pet, but you can include additional pets for an added fee that includes more time for the session and additional images. Can I be in the photos with my pet? Absolutely! These sessions are about celebrating your bond, and I encourage pet parents to be in the photos. Whether it's holding your pet, sharing a quiet moment, or simply sitting together, I will capture your love in a way that feels natural. What if my pet is anxious or camera-shy? I have experience working with pets of all temperaments, including those who are shy, anxious, or reactive. We will go at your pet’s pace and choose a location where they feel most comfortable. Can we do the session at my home? Yes! If your pet is most comfortable at home, I am happy to do the session there. Home sessions can be especially meaningful, as they capture your pet in their favorite, familiar environment. Do you offer black-and-white edits? Yes! While I provide a full gallery of beautifully edited color images, I can also create black-and-white edits upon request. What if I have to cancel or reschedule? I understand that circumstances can change quickly with a senior or ill pet. I offer flexible rescheduling and will do my best to accommodate any last-minute changes. How to Book a Celebration Session I understand that time is precious, and I offer flexible scheduling, including last-minute availability for urgent cases, when my schedule allows. If you are interested in a Celebration Session for your pet, please reach out as soon as possible. You can contact me to discuss your pet’s needs and schedule your session. A Compassionate Goodbye Losing a pet is never easy, but their love remains with us forever. Celebration Sessions provide a way to honor their life, tell their story, and preserve their memory for years to come. If you’re considering a session, know that I am here to support you with kindness and understanding every step of the way. As a proud affiliate photographer of the Tilly Project , I am part of an international network dedicated to connecting pet owners with end-of-life pet photographers. The Tilly Project provides accessible resources for photography, anticipatory grief, and pet loss support. Founded in 2021 by Lauren Kennedy, the project honors her cat, Tilly, and aims to offer comfort to families during their pets' final moments. “Because of the dog’s joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?” ― Mary Oliver, Dog Songs

Diving Deeper: Take a Look Behind the Scenes Here are a few behind-the-scenes moments from the morning. Lots of cute adoptable animals and big smiles. We made silly noises and threw treat bags around. We all crouched low and tested our flexibility to get the best angles. Overall, we had lots of fun, and it's all for such a great cause - helping adoptable pets find their forever homes! Did you see an animal in the behind-the-scenes photos that wasn't listed above? Check out Kelly's blog post to see if they are listed there! Are you a foster parent looking for photography services? While this event only comes around once per year, the three of us photographers are available to help capture beautiful photos of foster pets throughout the year. Kelly ( K Schulz Photography ) is based in Bloomington, MN Kirsten ( KME Photograph y ) is based in Minneapolis, MN Lauren ( Scruff Life Photography ) is based in Forest Lake, MN Please reach out if you have a foster animal in need of some professional photography to capture their personality and help them land the best forever family! It's truly an honor to volunteer my time and photography services to help rescue animals in our community! I'm already so excited about our event next spring!
- Pet Photographer: A Year in the Life
Hello, and welcome to the Scruff Life Photography blog! I'll write a proper introduction post with a brief history of SLP soon, but I wanted to start with a year-in-review of 2023 while it's still early in the year. This is not an exhaustive list of what was captured, but just a short list of some of the memorable moments. In January 2023, I celebrated two full years of Scruff Life Photography by embracing Minnesota's cold and very snowy winter weather with some adventure and winter sports photography! Later in the month, I hit the trails of Minnesota's North Shore to photograph the incredible John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon with my friend and occasional assistant photographer, Brooke! We spent three full days outside in the negative-degree temperatures to capture everything we possibly could from the 300+ mile mushing race from Duluth, MN to Grand Portage, MN. I'll write a blog to recap that entire experience someday! February kicked off with another sled dog race, this time on Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior, MN for the Klondike Dog Derby . This race is a unique glimpse into the sport of mushing as it is set up to be much more spectator-friendly compared to traditional long-distance races. It was a joy to witness the excitement and the hundreds of others there on the shores and in town! From there, I had two more adventure sessions in the beautiful snow and cold with some wild and adventurous dog moms. One of my favorite events from 2023 was the adoptable pets photo event in March at Tonkadale Greenhouse. I teamed up with my pet photographer friends, Kelly of K Schulz Photography and Kirsten of KME Photography to photograph nearly 40 adoptable dogs, cats, and pocket pets to help them find their forever families. Kelly also wrote an amazing blog post about this event. We are planning a return for 2024, so keep an eye out if you or someone you know fosters animals. The snow was still hanging on in Minnesota as we transitioned from winter into spring, but that didn't put a damper on Johnathan's Celebration Session. The sky came alive and we were treated to an break-taking sunset for this session. Do you know what they say about April showers and May flowers? Well, it was mostly April snow, but the May flowers part was true! I had an opportunity to shoot a session in a beautiful flower garden in Minneapolis with Lucy and her dog mom, Michelle! Also in Minneapolis, I photographed a very photogenic rescue puppy named Skye and that session quickly became one of my favorites because of how precious he was in every photo. Summer was busy in the best way! I photographed eleven dogs from June to August, not including the sunflower sessions. Several sessions were in familiar locations, but a few had me out of my comfort zone and shooting in new places like Como Park and the campus of St. Kate's in St. Paul. The highlight of summer was photographing Kona and Cassandra on a paddle board together, doing what they love to do together in the summer! August was also my second year offering sunflower mini photo sessions for people and their pets at Green Barn Garden Center 's Sunflower Days (Isanti, MN). In addition to the eleven dogs that attended mini sessions with me, I also got to meet eight more that participated in Green Barn's sunflower costume contest for the pups! This is a fun time of year and I look forward to my time out amongst the beautiful sunflowers! How cute are all of these sunflower dogs?! Also in August, and how could I forget... my artwork was accepted in the Minnesota State Fair's Fine Arts Exhibition. They accept around 10% of entries, so this was a huge honor and to be included on my first try was incredible! To top it off, many of you made your way out to the fair and stopped to see my photo and sent me selfies with it! Thank you so much to everyone who did that -- it was so special. The photo is from my trip to photograph the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. It is of the bacon lady tent at the Sawbill Checkpoint in the early morning hours of the mandatory layover for the mushers. I took some time off in September to go on a grand adventure with my fiancé and our dog, Conway! We went on a road trip through North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and South Dakota -- stopping at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, and Blue Mounds State Park before heading home. Grand Teton ended up being my favorite of the bunch, but we also saw our first moose in Idaho, so that was also a truly unforgettable experience! Fall is, in my opinion, the perfect season in Minnesota, and this year was no exception. I had three very special fall photo sessions in the beautiful fall foliage with some new faces and some familiar ones. Lastly, I offered pumpkin patch mini photo sessions for the very first time this year and I loved seeing everyone and their pups out at the patch for some spooky season photos! To round out the year, I finally found a graphic designer that I loved and decided to go all in on new branding for Scruff Life Photography! Cindy Roaming Designs was so fun to work with. She fully embraced my vision for the brand and created the cutest logo, submarks, and other graphics. I'm feeling so ready and fresh headed into the new year and can't wait to continue to show off the amazing work that Cindy did! It was a year for the books at Scruff Life Photography! Thank you to everyone who booked a session with me, ordered a photo or a product from me, supported me through liking, commenting, or sharing any of my posts on social media, and told your friends and family about my photography. I appreciate each one of you and I'm so grateful to have this opportunity to capture these memories of you and your pets together. I hope you all have a fantastic 2024 and if you are ever feeling like you need a few more photos with your pet, I'll be here! :) Please say 'hi' to your dog for me! Lauren

Tips for Visiting Dog-Friendly Waterfalls Keep your dog leashed at all times unless in designated off-leash areas. Bring plenty of water for both you and your pup. Check trail conditions ahead of time, as spring can bring muddy paths and high water levels. Pack dog waste bags and clean up after your pet to keep parks beautiful for everyone. Respect wildlife and stay on designated trails to protect natural habitats. Exploring waterfalls with your dog is a wonderful way to enjoy Minnesota’s natural beauty this spring.
